I think this will self-propagate as long as enough people adopt them. If you're the only Roman group who doesn't put your hand up and say "Ave" or whatever as a polite greeting then you'll quickly pick it up from those that do.

I think that cultural greetings/phrases/warcries etc (not necessarily accents) is a lovely idea, as long as it's low impact enough that people will adopt it, but high impact enough to give a clear sense of the culture. A good balance would be that each conversation should have a cultural indicator (Hello and Godbye being good examples) without each sentence necessarily having a cultural indicator.

Hey Matt, does this mean you'll actually come out from behind the computers at Odyssey? :-D

I have a special plan for computers at Odyssey - there won't be any. No downtime, no lammies, no character progression... What you gonna need a computer for?

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

So this means you'll have nothing to do, and will therefore be able to get the rest of us killed play along with the rest of us?

Also, I realised I derailed the thread. So here I am putting it back on its tracks.

I love the idea of cultural identifiers in the way a culture speaks. Starting with the suggested conversation openers, maybe including suggested sentence framing (like ending sentences with 'neh?') and perhaps also actions - like bowing and saying 'as Janus wills it' when leaving a conversation.

This could also be applied to how they write. Assuming missives and texts are likely to be part of the game. E.g. Romans starting letters with 'Ave' as they would conversation.

I'm kind of agnostic, partly because I'm incapable of doing any accent.

Lies! Poooontaaang.

PD will probably have to make sure that Punic/Phoencian (Carthaginian) is actually well-enough known that there are such basic phrases. I had a little google and could only find the sorts of things that would be on friezes, like 'triumph' and 'moon'. They've got the script and the grammar down, but not so much vocab, unlike the other four languages which have plenty of extant texts, AFAIK.

AHA! That's just my point. I can do a bunch of accents, but that's because I'm a theatre tart. Not one of the accents I can do have anything to do with this game. And I don't expect any of the player base to have to learn how to talk like a carthegenian for the sake of the game.

By introducing small culturally specific phrases such as "Ave" for the romans, "Salam" perhaps for the persians and so on. But also introducing small idiosyncrasies of speech we can create non-accent accents.

True, it might fall on its ass. But I think it's worth a shot.

Any ideas for speech patterns or suggested words for each culture. Remeber, history is OURS to toy with not the other way round, don't feel too pressured to be "accurate".

Non-accent accents? Do you mean dialects?

I've noticed a lot of greek letters start with "Hail" but that has a very Roman connotation for me, probably because of "Hail Caesar".

I know that good day in modern Greek is Καλημέρα (Kali Mera), but I don't know if this would have been used in ancient times.

Also a nice greek phrase is Olla Kallah, which means everything is good, a bit like "alles" klar in German and is possibly the root of the phrase "O.K".

So, only any good if you're playing William Wallace, then?

As for accents, I'd like them to happen on the proviso that they don't render people utterly incomprehensible (unless that's a deliberate aspect of the character, of course). I, personally, won't be doing an accent because I know I can't do them, and no accent will detract from the game less than an atrociously bad one would.

Equally I will not be doing anything other than speaking normally as I feel that having to say something at the beginning and end of a sentence would be just as immersion breaking for people as some outrageous accent.

Just my thoughts!
