OK, early in the "Throwing ideas into the arena to see which ones survive" process, I suggested that we ought to try to (forgive the phrasing) phys-rep accents.

Why bother?

It might work and be cool. I really don't have better reasoning than that.

It sounds like madness.

And don't get me wrong, I see your concern. The last thing I want is everyone from Persia feeling that they have to do their best Omid Jalili impersonation. Not least because not everyone can do accents and not everyone who can't do accents knows about it. While I don't want to say "you shouldn't play persian unless you can do the voice" I do like the idea of being able to listen to a character speak and being able to guess where they're from, or at least where they want you to think they're from.

I'm talking about coming up with five easily conformable speech patterns. We assign one to each culture and we're off...

For example:

Team Green speak in the third person, Team Blue do not use the apostrophe. Never "can't", always "cannot", Team Red make use of the noise "ah" at the beginning of sentances.

Simple things that most anyone can do that represent an accent.

Immediate downsides?

It's a hassle.  I agree. So are costume and camping.

People won't bother. Maybe not, but I think it's worth trying.

My main reason for wanting to try it out is this. I think it'll promote cultural cohesion between different groups of the same culture. It helps give everyone on team blue something in common and more so, something that they experience frequently. "Not like those stupid sounding bastards from team green."

I ask you then, what d'you think? Is this worth trying? Is there a better way of doing it? Any suggestions for speech patterns? I'm not sold on the examples above. Wha' you fink?

I for one am all for this style of accent. Accent does wonderful thing for group cohesion. I also love the idea of some persian practicing his roman accent in uptime while preparing to infiltrate the romans.

As for ideas for accents, I'll have to have a think.

Whilst it sounds like a good idea, i fear that people will forget unusual patterns of speech in stressful situations.

I reckon this is a good idea, I also reckon it'd be a miracle if it ever actually got off the ground. A simpler solution might be to just have specific phrases for greetings or pleasentaries. For example PD could choose to put very simple words like the greek for hello, goodbye, thank you etc into the culture packs. (Obviously latin for Roman, Egyptian for Egypt etc.) Or we could just make our own up. Carthage for instance: "Eh up, ate any good babies lately?"

I understand the 1st idea would be a lot of hard work on PD's part and the 2nd idea is probably as daft as the accent idea in general but it might be worth the effort.

Avoid the following comparisons:

Allo Allo. "Good Moaning!"

Alexander. Where Oliver Stone decided to use an Irish accent to indicate the difference between Macedonians and Greeks.

This would be absolutely superb, although might possibly be a little tricky for Punic (Carthaginian) and Ancient Persian - but then again, might hardly take more than a very short email to a relevant expert. It would be really cool to have all of the Romans greet people with 'Ave' and the Greeks thank people with 'evkharisto'...
Or maybe that's just me.

"Em hotep" is a good generic Egyptianish phrase to use. It's "In Peace", or something like that?

That's really nice. I don't much go in for foreign languages having the linguistic skills of a dead ferret, but even an eejot like me can learn two or three words/phrases. Can't pronounce them of course, but I could learn them.

A lot of stuff in LRP breaks down in stressful situations. People forget how many hits they have, or what their spell vocals are. Phys-reps often stop working (swords don't cut, limbs don't bleed, victims don't scream) and so on. I think the question is whether the "reduction in quality" during stressful situations is more damaging than the potential gains the rest of the time. I'm kind of agnostic, partly because I'm incapable of doing any accent.
