| After the VCR bill to ban replica firearms, is it a big leap to banning replica swords? And for rubber swords to be included in that? Sure it is a big leap but not that big a leap. Any thoughts? Should we be worried?

| I don't think it will get that far. There is rationale for replica firearms because, in most cases, they look like real guns and so can be mistaken for one and so be a risk. I don't think there is any risk of mistaking a LRP sword for a real one. However, if it does come to that, there is recourse. Re-enactors have an ID card system, supported by the police, which allows them to carry metal weapons. All you need to do is pay £7 and get a 'referee' to sign it for you. If it comes down to banning of any replica weapons, including latex, then we can look at setting up a similar system.

| AFAIK, the VCR bill is not yet law, it is still in committee stage. If I'm right, then all is not lost, write to your MP about it NOW. And dont just mention the guns, mention the ban on blades for under 18s, there are plenty of legitimate reasons for under 18s to need blades,* and its the law abiding ones that will be impacted by this. *Apprentice butchers, carpenters, and various other trades spring to mind.

| I can see whats being talked about as the tallows basket hilt I had was mistaken for a real sword on more than one occasion. As to the ID card that Balor mentioned I know nothing about it. I've been reenacting for nearly 10 years and nobodies aver mentioned it to me. Nor have I seen any talk about it anywhere on the medieval forums I read. Go on more info would be great. Not that I walk round with steel weapons all that often.

We had a battle reenactment society in university, people would turn out a few afternoons a week and fight with metal weapons. One night we didn't finish until after dark, which was fine for most of us who lived on campus but one guy had to walk back across town (ehich isn't actually as bad as it sounds, Lampeter is more of a small Welsh village than a town and its quite possible to walk from one end to the other at night without seeing anyone). Unfortunately this night someone did see him walking back with an axe and called the police. A few minutes later the society president got a call from campus security asking if there'd been a meeting today and when he said there was he was told "Ok, we'll send the armed response unit back then."
That was a metal sword I know, but not everyone realises that LARP weapons are made of plastic, and if you glance at someone on public transport and think you see them carrying a weapon the same could easily happen.
I sacrificed Philip Rogers to the Volcano God, and he blessed me with an alluring lammie printing machine and cursed me with a rough god queue pass. What will you sacrifice?

I can easily imagine the sale of replica swords being banned, even blunt ones can be sharpened. If legislation does come in that bans their sale and possession it would be only a matter of time before some member of the public complains about kids in the woods with replica swords and technically they are replica swords. Whether they look like swords or not would be for the courts to decide and latex swords are sold as replica swords. At the very least local councils could ban the public use of replica swords on their land?

| Its not really a problem... its no more of a problem than carrying fencing swords around is.... just bag them properly... you shouldn't really wander around anywhere public with something that can be mistaken for a weapon. Any responsible LRP society using public land should be doing the courtesy of informing the Police of when and where theri events are held so that the Police can respond appropriately to any member of the Public who gets worried. A foam sword is not remotely in the same category as a replica firearm... entirely different legislation would need to be applied, and then forced through parliament, I feel this is unlikely to be near the top of the governments list of priorities... you rarely here of people robbing banks a sword point, replica guns on the other hand... On the other hand if you want to try and help them get banned we could continue random scaremongering stories about the likelyhood of it happening....
