| Hi! I'm writing an article about Massacres and Masquerades first event, Aliens and Alienation, which will be published in the next issue of A Life Less Ordinary. At present, the piece will be entitled Event and Eventuality and will focus on comments from people who played the game. If you'd like to contribute to this, all you need to do is answer some, or all, of the following questions: Who are you? Who and/or what character did you play? The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was? The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was? My favourite moment was? What three words sum up the event for you? You can either post your answers here, or pm them to me. All contributors will receive a copt of the draft to ensure that they aren't being misrepresented. Any help anyone can give me would be really appreciated. Thanks.

I'm interested to hear about the article, and I look forward to seeing how it comes out. Ah, questions:
Who are you?
I'm Conrad Jones. I've been LRPing for about five years, from big fest events to friendly local systems.
Who and/or what character did you play?
I played Commodore Hawke, a ballsy conservative Naval hero - imagine a strongly C of E Lord Flashheart, and you're pretty much there. The organisers provided me with the opportunity to foreshadow and harbinge a lot, by asking me whether I wanted to be the surviving member of the Antarctic expedition. I leapt at the chance, and I'm glad I did.
The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
There was not a moment in the entire weekend that I lacked something to do, or the ability to connect with my character. Maintaining pace is difficult for a LRP, but in Aliens and Alienation there wasn't a moment where I didn't have to romance, fight, debate politics or military strategy, canvas for investment, foil faerie plans, support my employers and allies, ridicule reformist policies or drink tea. As a result, I had a marvellous time and managed to overcome some truly terrible hangovers to get right back into the action.
The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The site was sometimes unforgiving on period costume. The forests were on a treacherous incline, the main courtyard was dust and large gravel, and the fields were a little verdant for a good game of boules. None of these problems were insurmountable, however, and the players took any damage incurred with a good spirit.
My favourite moment was?
The moment the aliens arrived! Imagine you've been dancing as elegantly as you can manage for the last few hours, when in the midst of the music, the courtyard is suddenly overrun by screeching horrors in terrifying costumes, cutting down the dancers as the musicians scatter. The shock was very real, and really helped create the atmosphere for the following night of tense survival horror.
What three words sum up the event for you?
Fast-paced, varied and awesome.

| Who are you? Sophie Tynan from Durham. Relatively new to LARP and normally play a small local system and Maelstrom Who and/or what character did you play? Hrabin Nascilik, Irena Radziwill, a displaced Polish noble who is determined to use her time in England to try and restore some of Polands independance and glory after the Russian Invasion. She is quite traditional and fond of the English ways. The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was? Always having something to do. I was worried that playing a character with no practical skills such as sword skills, medicine or magic might leave me with little to do, but I found that i was always busy, talking to somebody, praying, running away or just watching drama unfold. It was very entertaining and i got some wonderful role play out of it. The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was? I think some people found it a little different to stay in period, not in character as such, but in period, so sometimes manners, ettiquette or reactions suitable for the period were ignored and whilst it didnt realy spoil it it made it a bit odd at times. My favourite moment was? Two choices: the ladies being determined to play a civilised game of whist despite the evenings events and whilst studiously ignoring some of the outlandish conversations taking place behind us. It was incredibally surreal, but i thought summed up a stoic British noble attitude quite well. if not that then getting as many people as possible to pray over Serefina so she could change back from being a wolf. It was incredibally intense and quite moving to have a group of people kneeling around her gripping their crosses and rassary and muttering vaguely Catholic prayers by candlelight. And the relief when it worked! oh my! What three words sum up the event for you? creative, intriguing, fun
PD - ??
DUTT - ref
M&M - Hrabina Naczelnik, Irena Radziwill, Ordynat Radziowie, The Szlachta Seirota (yes that is one person. go go Polish nobility).

Who are you?
Michelle Taylor, also known as ChessyPig on the internet. I'm the Head Ref of Cambridge University Treasure Trap for this coming year, and have been playing all kinds of LARP for over five years now.
Who and/or what character did you play?
Lady Cerine Faulconer, an entirely proper (if rather teenaged) English Noblewoman.
The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The atmosphere - everyone's costume was marvellous, everyone with an accent maintained it well and managed to avoid it becoming a comedy feature, and the whole thing really felt like being in a costume drama from beginning to end - people even successfully maintaining their characters' attitudes and outlooks through the alien attacks, when it must have been tempting to revert to more efficient modes of communication and action...
The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
Having totally forgotten that there was such a thing as sunscreen which one might want to apply before standing in a field in the blazing July sun all day in a Regency dress... I know I'm not the only lady who went home with a rather fearsome sunburn!
My favourite moment was?
Probably the part when the evening's attacks finally caught up with Cerine and she completely lost it and started with the serious hysteria and weeping about the blood, all the blood... most of my game was much more genteel and relaxed than this and provided many moments of rather quieter roleplaying joy, though!
What three words sum up the event for you?
Storybook Regency Romance :-).
Maelstrom: Yellow Cap (#include standard not-speaking-for-PD-here disclaimer)
Odyssey: Nepthys, Keeper of the Knives, Khemenethorus
CUTT: Head Ref 09/10
M&M: Princess Cerine, née Faulconer

This looks good. Be very interesting to see what the article is like and happy to help...
Who are you?
Ian Ayliffe - Long time RPer - I remember when there was only D&D, Runequest and Traveller. Been playing in various LRP systems for about six years.
Who and/or what character did you play?
Commodore Matthew Fallow of the Royal Navy. A career naval officer who finds himself a little out of his depth in the world of weekend parties and polite society.
The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The immersion into character. So often in LRP you find people dropping in and out of character. In this game everyone pushed to stay IC as much as possible sometimes without a single stop between time-in and time-out. Effectively becoming their characters for 12 to 14 hours.
The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The gravel. Very difficult to walk on, let alone dance or fight. Apart from that the site seemed excellent. Rules-wise there was nothing more than a few teething problems which you'd expect at any first event and are being quickly sorted.
My favourite moment was?
I actually got tangled up in a romance plot. For me this is unheard of as I generally turn into tapioca in those situations. But through player interaction, including some inspired matchmaking, it lead to some fantastic role-playing.
What three words sum up the event for you?
Immersive, Detailed, Elegant

Hello!
Who are you?
Jonathan Rampling - I'm part of the M&M crew. I've been doing LARP for about six years now.
Who and/or what character did you play?
Several. I played some aliens, Mr. Palmer the servant, but primarily I played Lt. Gen. Ivan Paskevich, a Cossack responsible for the invasion of Poland.
The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
Playing an alien. Leaping out at people, watching their reactions, being killed each time. Also, the general high level of immersion that was maintained throughout the weekend was excellent. And proposing, of course!
The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
By and large, very little went wrong. I think a few rules need ironing out, but that's only to be expected. Some of the crew tasks were a little monotonous, but certainly weren't a problem and were well more than worth the great fun I had the rest of the time.
My favourite moment was?
Duelling a Hussar was a good hard laugh.
What three words sum up the event for you?
Corsets. Sabres. Aliens.
Maelstrom: Crazy Uncle Yverdon
Odyssey - Sesh-Hentasoo, General of Lower Egypt
White City: Rowatt the Riverman - Larcenous cut-throat
Masquerades & Massacres: Crew

Who are you?
My name is Jo Devine, I live in Glasgow and I've been larping for a little over two years in a couple of different systems.
Who and/or what character did you play?
I played Miss Claudette-Louise Lafayette-Moreaux, a rich New Orleans socialite visiting England with her large family of voodoo practitioners.
The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
There were a lot of things about A&A that were so spectacular, from the very high standards of kit to the fact that there was a real sense of immersion throughout the entire game.
There was such a wonderful balance between the delicate, interpersonal relationship roleplay of attempting to secure a good engagement for yourself, and the intense, adrenaline fuelled combat and panic of the alien attack. The transition from one to the other was absolutely seamless and nothing felt forced or out of place.
The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
Not getting any pictures of my own, but this was merely the downside of the fact that the whole event felt so involving. Since there always felt like there was something to do or somebody to talk to, I didn't want to drop out of character in order to use my camera, and didn't want to trouble the crew by asking them to do it for me since they were already doing so much.
My favourite moment was?
There are so many, it really is very hard to choose. Since I'm not really allowed to choose the entirety of Saturday as a single moment, I'll have to narrow it down to either the first alien attack interrupting the last waltz or being proposed to in front of the entire assembled company by Commodore Hawke. It's very rare that I manage to have my plans come to fruition in larp, so securing the engagement Claudette wanted came with a very good feeling of accomplishment!
What three words sum up the event for you?
Only three? Exciting, immersive and awesome!
PD - Kaliska, tribe of the Crescent Moon, the one with the purple dreads
Masquerades & Massacres - Miss Claudette-Louise Lafayette Moreaux, the one with the ringlets

Who are you?
Andrew Hawkins, I work in the city as an administrator
Who and/or what character did you play?
I was Captain Magus William Fairchild, Regimental Surgeon (Detatched) of the 67th Foot
The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The immersive level of the etiquette and mentality of the period
The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The near casual "resurections" that took place. It made life feel quite safe rather than giving it a fearful feel.
My favourite moment was?
Hmmm... hard to say, holding a Yurt captivated by a scrying ritual, surgery on Commodore Hawke or proposing and getting accepted are all quite high on my list.
What three words sum up the event for you?
I HATE FAERIES!
PD: Veritas (Smith Eidolon)
M&M: Regimental Surgeon Magus Cpt. William Fairchild of the 67th Foot (second batallion)
OOC: Andy

Who are you?
I'm Laura Ferguson, I've been larping in various systems for about 6 years
Who and/or what character did you play?
I played Delilah-Mae Lafayette Moreaux, a slightly scandalous but ultimately disarming New Orleans belle from a family of plantation owners
The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The immersion - a lot of the time at events like this with a long IC time, I find myself dropping out of character either due to boredom or just wanting a break, but at this event I had no desire at all to go OC during time-in.
The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was?
The lack of perma-death. I'm not exactly a fan of everyone dying, but a little death (or at least the real threat of it) keeps you on your toes.
My favourite moment was?
Stamping out the Loa to buff up our group to avoid horrible alien-related death. It was so atmospheric and we even got a few of the English involved!
What three words sum up the event for you?
Exhilarating, Charming, and Fun!
Maelstrom: Fionn Morrigan, Flotilla Sacuza Trading
Masqerades: Delilah-Mae Lafayette Moreaux, rich white trash
RL: Laura

| - Who are you? Nathan Hook, larper for 13 years (larped in 5 foreign countries), civil servant and OU student, - Who and/or what character did you play? Dr. Geroge Bellamy, metaphysician and watcher's council expert on Vampires. and Henry Stuart, (CoE) Bishop of the (dragonriding) ariel corps - The best thing about Aliens and Alienation was? the attempt (using costume, mannerisms and mindset) to create the atmosphere of the setting (both the historical period, and genre conventions) - The worst thing about Aliens and Alienation was? Too much freedom in character creation undermining some of the core themes. - My favourite moment was? the complex social politics of who dances with who. - What three words sum up the event for you? England endures.
