| I was talking to a few fellow frothers earlier today and we got onto the topic of whether we think that EOS suits PvP or PvM more and whether we were happy with the levels of both in the system at the minute. It occured to me that I was curious to find out what other people thought about this and if they thought the balance in the game was working? I dont mean any kind of critisism or rebuke here at all and EOS is still my favourite system, I was just interested to know other peoples views on the subject............... and the fact that I am phenominally bored at work and need entertainment! Cheers Mark

I think its kind of both. There is pvp but most groups try to mitigate this as much as possible because combat is deadly and it does spiral look at event 1 with if elves and 1 orc that ended up with lots of dead elves.
Also there is the big nasty which we all know is out there and are worried about again its fear of death, but in this case it binds us together.

Personally when I'm plotting things to do, I plan for the PvP side of things as I expect it at Eos, however I also accept that there will be reasonable levels of PvE/M since the combat is so deadly that killing off a group of people at Eos effectiely kills off about 20% of the characters. In larger systems you can rely more on PvP since with 1000 players its not so bad if 20-40 people die in an event, where in Eos the PvE/M helps calm down some issues and take the focus off of one another at certain times, allowing the survival of the current caste of characters and their story.

For me, I like the PvP element because in a game where players must struggle for resources and even simple things such as food and shelter it adds more desperation to the proceedings and brings up interesting RP such as if a human murdered an elf for food because he would have otherwise starved, and then seeing how the racial tensions begin and to where they may lead. So it's not just a case of clobbering one-another but also the struggle just to survive the hostile elements.
As far as monster encounters go, it's be be expected NPCs from other parts of the waste will turn up. They will want to see who these people are, some may see them as easy pickings and attack. Monsters and NPCs provide activity and wonder to players who might not be so interested in diplomancy.
So yeah, for me the formula works since stirring up racial tensions is fun (and tasty) but I always like to bash a few gribblies at an LRP weekend before I go home. Or cower in fear. Whatever works best at the time.

On larger scale (1 group having a go at another) I think it is quite similar in EOS and Insurrection: the factions have concluded that no matter how much we dislike each other, there are worse things out there and we need all of us to deal with them. So I am not expecting much of the faction rolling that we see at Maelstrom.
Individual murder is another thing altogether. If you go out in the woods today, you're probably someones lunch.

| I have to disagree. The Warefarers just got wiped out by the Velvet Glove in Insurrection. PVP is very much alive and kicking in Insurrection. In fact in Insurrection we are supposed to all be fighting the commonwealth. We have REASONS to remain friends and limit the PVP. But we didn't. In EOS were are 6-10 random tribes and races all colonising the world. We have REASONS to pvp each other. Sometimes very good reasons, sometimes very weak reasons. The racial books clearly give each faction an enemy to go mess with. Yet we haven't as of yet. At first glance EOS should be more PVP than PVE and Insurrection should be almost totally PVE due to the common enemy of the commonwealth. As it happens neither are that simple.

| Insurrection is very deliberately PvPvE and the game is structured to reflect that; factions compete over XP-bearing objectives so that if one wants the full 10XP for an event, at least one other is limited to 8XP. Plus each faction's motivation for battling the Commonwealth is radically different and, in several cases, near-incompatible. The point of Insurrection, in many ways, is that you are forced to work alongside your enemies and that this creates a tension. EOS has seen wipeouts of entire groups before now, and is also intended to be PvPvE, I believe. While LRP always has the risk of outbreaks of diplomacy, I'm pretty sure that the conflicts already extant are just bubbling under the surface and will erupt. There are often event-specific common enemies that cause the PCs to band together in a short-lived truce. Insurrection's advantaged by having a very large crew. EOS is advantaged by having many more players. Both are very good systems, if I do say so myself ;-)

RangerWithTheSword (7/2/2009) The Warefarers just got wiped out by the Velvet Glove in Insurrection.
I didn't think the glove wiped them out? Just decided not to help when they got into a fight with the humans.
How I laughed. Sitting in the big tent having a drink with one of the elves when one of the wayfarers dashed in saying the humans were attacking and burning everything to the ground. I look at elf, elf looks at me. "So? another drink then?"

Did someone say there has been no "racial brief PvP at EOS?" Oh, I beg to differ as i've been In it. And killed by it I agree that there is a sense of us "banding together" recently, against various Big Bad Plots. I'm not overly sure there is an undercurrent of "the first chance the bakers get they are killing the cakemakers" because i've just not heard of any, but there probably is
