| I've thinking alot about pirates in LARP as late. A number of poeple I know have talked about trying LARP if pirates came into it. Add to the fact the event going on in Portmouth it got me thinking. Walking around field really is ****** as a pirate. You need a ship. Make them walk the plank! Good old Google hads give me(us) one.
http://www.glenlee.co.uk/newsite/index.shtml AND before you start shooting down this idea.... (I know you are because its NOT a scout camp) 1, I don't believe its that exspenive as they have kids parties. You can't charge alot as parents are mostly short of cash. 2, They allready have fancy dress parties (with pirates) and party games. So a little LARP party is not a big jump. 3. Yes, I know its Glasgow but its not that hard to get there. The site is centred to the city. AND 4 for once try. All they can do to you is 'no'. If you pitch it right (example use Maelstrom vids) to the owners. It will mean 'we' have a great place for parties and not another scout camp

As I said on the other thread, I think it's worth looking into the pricing as I do think it'd be prohibitavely expensive to get enough of the ship for a long enough period. I looked into it for my wedding in 2004 and it would be 1000 quid then for the evening hire of the main room alone: food and other rooms not included. The kids party option is 80 for 2 hours in the afternoon for enough space for 35 kids to play in, so not as much space as larpers would need. It is something worth looking into but I think you need some figures before mooting it. Bear in mind that you'd be very unlikely to get it overnight and so your attendees would also need somewhere to sleep.
Being in Glasgow isn't that much of a drawback in and of itself - its very accessible by air from most UK and Ireland airports, particularly given that Edinburgh airport is easily accessible via public transport, and I've certainly travelled further for events before. Particularly given that you're probably looking at running a pretty small event comparatively speaking. But I think you need to actually approach the Tall Ship people rather than just using the website because there's some answers you need and won't get without talking to them.
For the record, I don't think people turn down sites that aren't scout camps just because they're different, its just that scout camps have the massive advantages of available crash space, room to run around in and general amount of privacy which are three important factors in event running, particularly events lasting more than a few hours. Other kinds of sites are available and I've larped in several - castles, churches, nuclear bunkers and the like - but scout camps do have the advantage of being relatively easy which is one reason why they're so popular.

Having run a fair few pirate events in the past I do like the idea of a ship.
But what would you actually do? Not as if you could sail anywhere. The health and safety would hardly allow you swing in the rigging. You couldn't really have baddies attack over the sides or anything. Basically you would be stuck on a boat, in Glasgow. Not much fun.
I don't know what you have against scout camps. Yes there are some terrible ones but there some awesome ones too. The one we use has an awesome cottage and surrounded by beautiful woodland. Yes there are some concrete monstrosities but don't judge them all before you have seen them.
Hey ho, each to their own, just my opinion. But hey if you work out what to do on your ship, count me in!

Personally, I would get some crew and re-enactors together and sail around the British Isles doing shows about what life was like. Also to pay for costs, sell some tickets to people who want to get into traditional sailing techniques and run courses. Plus looking at what she's been used for as far as TV work goes, someone always needs a ship!
Okay. I might just let some LRPers use her for events etc at a reduced cost
PS on the site is a Brigantine for around £400,000.

Well as I said, I'm just doing a service to letting organizers know 'its there'. Yes, thx for point it out, the SS/BBB team (even if it is a thread high-jack ). You guys are doing one of the most exciting thing in UK LARP right now.As for 'scout camps' I openly admit to being a 'site snob'. The way I look at it I've spent all my money and time on trying to get good costume. When I see the photos to show they not tried with the site then I look else where. Most camps are too modern for allot of LARP settings. I know the one your talking about north of Exeter. Its ok but we should always try for better.
