Pull-ups suck even more than push-ups.
The trick is to do (say) 10 pull-ups and 20 push-ups a day for the 1st week, then up it to 20/40, then 30/60, etc. Don't try to do all your day's exercises at once -- just knock out, say, 3 pull-ups before breakfast, then another couple around midday, another couple in the afternoon, & 3 before bed -- whatever you can manage. Don't hurt yourself, or push yourself to the point of failure -- just get used to the exercises. After a few weeks, you'll be able to do 5 or 10 pull-ups in a row, or 20-odd push-ups, and laugh at lesser mortals.

Yeah, it works pretty well if you specifically want to get better at 1 or 2 exercises, and pull-ups and push-ups are such staples (and yet so hard to do, for most people) that it's well worth considering for those.
The method is known as "greasing the groove" & was popularised in the West by Pavel Tsatsouline, but was in use for years by other Russian athletes. This article covers the basics (among other things):

I can't read 'greasing the groove' without sniggering. Sorry.
Thought I'd chip in with my 2p since I've been training for the Great North Swim, which has entailed some 'getting fit' on my part (sponsor my efforts in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind at http://www.justgiving.com/scooke). I've been unfit for a long time and have a long term knee injury which cramps my stile somewhat. I'm also, like raggedhalo, vegan.
What I've done is build up gradually - first by swimming twice a week for fourty minutes a time and I also altered my diet to involve more salads and I eat breakfast later in the day. This has effectively eliminated the 10am meal that I often ended up eating as it's become breakfast.I've been drinking much more water too. I've made sure that I always have fruit to hand in case I get peckish - much better than getting a bag of crisps.
Once I was a little fitter I joined a gym for three months and have used that as a pre-swimming warm up and to exercise muscle groups that are not used so much in swimming. Joining a gym was odd and difficult - but you get an induction in how to use the machines by the staff and so it's not as scary as I thought it would be.
I started all this at the end of May and am now swimming 2.5k twice a week with a half hour gym session before hand, plus one one mile swim done at pace preceded by the gym.
I've lost eight or nine pounds and am much fitter - and it's hardly taken any time to achieve really. What has helped is that I've forced myself to work by signing up for a sporting event that I cannot back out of, and I've given myself a target time for the swim (I'm aiming at the 25min mark for the mile; my time was 40'odd mins in May and it's 27 mins now).
So basically - set yourself some targets/sign up for something/join a club; eat well; drink lots of water and exercise regularly (though it needn't kill you). Not exactly rocket science.

Me too! I'm doing it for Diabetes UK. There's at least one other LRPer I know of also doing it for Guide Dogs.
I was swimmng regularly before I signed up and started thinking about training rather than just swimming. My biggest training problem is finding a lake I'm allowed to swim in without joining a triathlon club, which I dont want to do as I cant run (persistent injury problem) and am not fond of cycling...

Well done on the weight loss. 25mins is a quite a target, and well done on getting your time to 27. Is that in a pool or in open water? I've improved my front crawl endurance a fair bit but my times are nowhere near that. As of next week I no longer have to give my other half a lift to work so I can swim before work rather than just at lunchtimes so that will help as I'll have more time. This week's training has been written off by a bout of food poisoning though...

Yup that'd be Kate - I will probably be acting as her guide swimmer.

I'd been unable to do any real exercise for a few months while waiting for a diagnosis on new problems with my knee. I've not bothered trying to find an actual lake to swim in and am instead concentrating on making sure my training enables me to swim considerably more than the required distance in a pool because open-water swimming will be much more difficult.

That's in a pool - I did quite a lot of swimming up until I went to university at 17 (so 17 years ago now) - I'm finding that it's a bit like riding a bike - you never forget, but it hurts like hell to take it up again after a long gap of no cycling.

| Yep, it is Kate. I think I'm swimming at the same time as you then... I suggested to Kate that we meet for hot chocolate afterwards. We'll deserve it; Windermere in September could be a bit parky! Main reason I want to find a suitable lake is so I can practise the not kicking off the end thing, and work out just how weird swimming in a wet suit in a lake really is...

| NEWS UPDATE!!! Just to keep people who might be really bored updated I am now upto Stage 2 of Operation: Make Dave Look Better!! I'm now on a calorie controlled diet. Not because I have loads to lose however I figure I have some to lose and its a diet that both my wife and I can undertake together. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, I am now attending the gym. Currently I'm going daily and while I'm not particulary on top of my current level I am currently focusing on cardio stuff and increasing my general level of fitness before I think about tackling weights and attempting to bulk up. Many thanks to everyone for their comments and assistance. Dave

Harpy King (7/15/2009) Hey Dave I still think you should start playing for your local Rugby team, you know you'll love itI probably would, however I'm not that interested in taking up a competative sport which would require me to give up my weekends when I would want to be roleplaying instead. That said, of course, I don't roleplay every single weekend. In fact the ammount I do is slowly declining... something I need to do something about!!
