I think ultimatley here I'm trying to establish if we are deleting certain events from history as it were in order to give the Greek City States a fresh slate in terms of inter-state relations or wether we will be leaving them as they were prior to the established time period.

Hopefully the brief will shed some light on this, if not then a well-placed email to us will get some kind of response. However the key point to me is that no matter what we build into the background there will be a requirement for the player characters to choose to engage with this kind of historically-based background. For example we're not going to stalk the site criticising Spartans who will actually shared a table with Athenians and so on. Whilst PvP within a nation is certainly a potentially really interesting part of the game it's only one aspect - from the perspective of the gods (as collectively as they operate) the headline is 'triumph over the other nations' rather than 'engage in all out civil war within the nations'. I guess there's a potential analogy with the Iliad - the various kings and captains had a common cause established that to some extent overrode any natural animosity.

But we just write background - none of it will survive contact with the players intact and that's almost certainly a good thing!

Can I put that on a t-shirt?

I'm not going to tell you what you can or can't do. When I look at that I see a slightly-cheeky homage to a loveable rabbit who is the copyright of a famous (and rich) author/illustrator. As a result PD is never going to put it on t-shirts or use it at all officially as we don't have permission to do so. We assert no rights over the character etc.

In short, the model you propose of worshipping Athena will work fine in my eyes. Maybe not so fine in Ares', but that's for him and Athena to sort out.

Probably best to take this off-list; drop me a line at iana@profounddecisions.co.uk and I'll try and answer your queries insofar as I can - but bear Simon's point above in mind.

Thanks for your responces Ian and Simon - I'm certainly not looking for an excuse for war, I'm simply pondering about what lense I scruitinise Spartans few - seeing as, at one point, I would have considered them honorable if not a bit barbaric allies - but after the Peloponesian war I would have considered them...well as above. Like in the same vein I'm not going to go about slotting people for worshiping Ares, making overtures to turn them away from him is much more likely. Greece before Polis is going to be prevailant in my mind - after all I'm not Athens as a whole, I'm just part of one group of Athenians I can't make decisions on the behalf of the Polis, I can be as pedantic about my personal anti-Sparta bias on the boards but at the end of the day I'm working against Athen's best intrests to start another war with Sparta IC, so while I might tar spartans with the same brush its unlikely to spill over into a fight, I'm an Athenian, we're supposed to wah at people to pick a fight .

It seems to be my motto for LARP that I haven't grown accustom to a system until I've made an enemy of at least ONE god...and given the God Game is whats really made me want to play Odyssey, seeing how Ares and Athena settle it is exactly what I'm here for. Anywho...back on topic...

Carthage looks really really intresting - it makes me want to go back and read the smigins of un-corrupted history for them.

If anyone is putting together a more trader / merchant style Carthage group please drop me an email as I would be very interested.
I'm more of the beer keg type than 6 pack so I think I'll skip any warrior role.

As for Historical acuracy, this is LARP not bloody re-inactment.
