Is it be possible to have text entry fields that don't try to be 'helpful' by way of automatically adopting the existing formatting of pasted text without giving you any markup tags to allow you to easily manipulate that formatting?

Because its slightly annoying having to paste things into notepad, and then re-copy then from there to remove any hidden formatting due browsers not having a 'Paste Special, As plain text' option (something that I attribute to the, merciful, dearth of 'smart' text entry fields)

On a related topic (while I'm moaning) is it possible to turn off the automatic double line carriage returns?

In short, no, and no.
It's a browser limitation into the textbox, not the actual textbox being smart, I could get around it, but that would involve making the textbox smart, and from this release forward my focus is not new forum features, especially not ones that deliver such low return for time invested.

Incidentally if you are copying from word or a browser, you can copy only the content, with either a hotkey or sortof "Copy Special" option, can't precisely remember what it's called, but its something the guys in webdev here use all the time.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Double line carriage returns" as all my carriage returns come through as singles. If you can further explain the problem I "might" be able to help with this one.

In the interest of total fairness, im doing this one in IE:

Ah... yes, double line breaks. I now understand your entire problem.

Ok, the solution is simple, see in the lower part of the screen (when editing a post) theres a button that says
Design | HTML

If you select HTML, that allows you to edit the raw source of your post, this "Might" fix your copy and paste problem also. If you want to carry on using the Rich Text 'Design' Editor, simply hold shift and press enter for a single line break.

The Line breaks thing happens because of how HTML editors work, they insert <P> tags for every line break, as they assume that a hard carriage return is a new paragraph, editing directly in the HTML / Source view, will alleviate this, you can switch back and fourth also, so you can edit your posts as much aas you like.

Hope this Helps

I can't see that button, should it be in the 'Post Reply' or 'Post Options' panel?

If you are replying, it is just above the "Post Reply" button, but below the text field you write your post in.

In that case, I suspect that the button is only present on the Admin version of the posting dialog.

Possibly, however, lets consider something else whilst I look into that, what version of Internet Explorer does your company Force on you? My money's on 5 or less.
