I enjoy LotR Risk. The timing element keeps it manageable as a family game (plays in under 3 hours! The joys of not having to hope the cat's not eaten the board when you come back from dinner!) and the random elements are also fun for a family game. Risk's not a serious, hardcore wargame anyway, never has been, never will be. But as a game which made my 6-year-old son very happy when he won his first game as the Black Armies of Sauron, it's a great, great game.

From that point of view I can understand why it would be enjoyable, but unfortunately I've got no children to appreciate the game with (can anyone else hear a violin playing?).

Saying that, I do take my strategy games seriously including basic ones like Risk and Games Workshop, which is not to say that I don't enjoy myself as well. I can see the appeal of LOTR Risk, especially thanks to the films for people that haven't yet read the books. It wasn't exactly the time limit on the game that I disliked, it was the way it could end at any point in the game, so if you were last in the turn sequence the chances are that you would have less turns than anyone else; an interesting twist but all the same it wasn't something I liked.

If you want a short game with the simplicity of Risk's rules, I would always suggest 2210, which has only five turns (I think, it has been a while).

I've just remembered - you're boring, and I've got legs!

One of the suggested fixes for the time limit inequality is to divide each player's final score by the number of turns they played.

It's always possible to just not play with the Ringbearer, though; or alter the die roll for him to move off (I favour, he only moves out of a die-roll territory on a roll of 6).

Picked up the Star Wars Risk (Clone Wars Edition) in T. K. Maxx this week for £11.

It's rather good -- better than LotR Risk I think, though the latter's still good. The timing mechanism in SW Risk is preferable, as it's at the players' discretion when to use it (invoking "Order 66"), at which point the game tends to end pretty fast.

As a counterpoint, albeit not a very good one, I really disliked both Risk 2210 and Risk Godstorm. My friends and I hated Godstorm so much, my mate auctioned it off at work for charity, and the only reason that I'm not flinging 2210 out of the window is because I have a running rivalry with my brother, and need it to keep up the numbers. Of course, I could sell it and maybe buy two board games with the price I get...hmmm.

I'd love to tell you all why I didn't like them in great details, but, (and I'm not being flippant here honest) I really can't remember it anymore, It was so bad I blocked it from my mind. We put the game away and quietly agreed we'd never play it again. Then we probably got out Settlers or Power Grid or something.

I'm of the opinion that attempts to improve on a game which was already pretty good, haven't made it better at all, and both games have introduced random elements which can swing things away from the strategist, and toward the luckier player, I certainly found that with Godstorm.

If I can recommend a game which is good, based on space exploration and is quite lightweight, it would be Nexus Ops, which is a lot of fun, and quite reasonably priced, and lightweight (it doesnt take aeons to play).

Played "Risk: Black Ops" a couple of months back, and very much enjoyed it -- fuller write-up on my blog, here:

Bought Transformers Risk for my 10 year old for his birthday coz he thinks normal Risk looks boring, we haven't got round to breaking it out yet but IMO anything that establishes itself as a bridge to games such as Risk can't be half bad, because by the time they're bored of the novelty aspect, whether it be Transformers, LOTR or Harry Potter (I hope they don't, but you never know!) they will be old enough to appreciate "Proper" Risk.

I've got Star Wars risk and I don't really like the Order 66 - I find it just wrecks an otherwise ok - as long as the bad guys hold on until near the end they can take almost the entire board in one swoop and put the emperor somewhere unreachable. Just seems too harsh to me
