Being an absolute RISK fan, I have noticed a few new variants on the game, and I must admit I am very keen on getting my hands on them,

RISK 2210: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Risk-2210-A-D-Board-Game-Brand-NEW-in-Sealed-Box_W0QQitemZ8724096708QQcategoryZ93844QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

RISK GODSTORM: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Risk-Godstorm-Board-Game-NEW-EBG013_W0QQitemZ5175032792QQcategoryZ2558QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Have any of you got either? or have played them? Are they any good, just so I can get a bit of an independent review, before I plough my money into them!!

(Oh and for those of you who may have the LOTR RISK, it looks like the expansion is back in print, finally all beit in Dutch: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lord-of-the-Rings-RISK-Gondor-Mordor-expansion-NEW_W0QQitemZ8816352490QQcategoryZ19096QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I own Risk 2210, and I really enjoy playing it.

There's more to it that 'regular' risk in that in addition to troops you also get 'energy'

You use energy to purchase special commanders (nuclear, diplomat, land, sea, and space) and also to buy cards for these that are themed on the commander

the nuke comander has lots of rocket strikes, and you can even nuke continents!, the diplomat has things like ceasefire (stops them attacking you for a turn).

Its also limited to 5 turns, and you have to get victory points (based on how much land you have, plus you can get some from cards.

It also helps in that the game is more agressive, 'cos you've only got a limited time to win.

And finally, best of all, you can invade THE MOON!

Yeah, buy it!

Ahem, not only can you invade the moon but you get to invade back from it!  And you get loads of little warbots, and what more could you reasonably want?  Plus, you could always use the game board as inspiration for a sci-fi game...  ;-)

A friend of mine used a Settlers of Catan game to build a world map. I've always been tempted to use a Risk game to define a world map for one of my campaign ideas. Of course it means getting some folks who can play Risk, as I'm catastrophic at it. A close game would make for a better map, and better plot.

Actually, save your money and get Twilight Imperium instead.

http://www.iguk.co.uk/products/twilight-imperium-3rd-edition-2569.aspx

It does cost more than RISK and variants but you always have something to do and there's lots of turns/ round.  Also, you get a lot more little plastic models to play with and that's always fantastic.  :-D

Looks like the kind of game I like! But, I gotta get the RISK 2210 first then! Sounds like a decent change from the usual 50 game RISK tourneys that we play (For cash at the end of course...)

Anyone played the Godstorm one?

I've played 2210 and Godstorm. Godstorm is similar to 2210, in that it has faith, which does pretty much the same as 2210 energy, and Gods instead of commanders. However, you use a much smaller map (in that there's no moon and no mini-continents between the continents), and before each battle the Gods battle each other to destruction. Also, when your troops die, they go to the underworld, and battle to be reincarnated (or whatever). This means that troops are mostly irrelevant, as the Gods will swing most battles, as they give bonuses to your troops, and whoever has had the most casualties is going to have the most troops reincarnated. With a smaller map as well, the game is a lot quicker... and a lot less like Risk. For a long time, I didn't like Godstorm for this reason, but then I approached it as a different game altogether - not Risk, but a game that is vaguely similar, and from a non-judgemental point of view, it's ok.

However, Pete Coffey is right when he says buy Twilight Imperium 3rd ed. Since getting TI3, we've played 2 games of Risk... and that's over about a year.

2210 all the way!

I also played risk2 on my pc. The AI is a bit weak, but had lots of fun building up armies with 90+ soldiers. The thing which really got me was the expanded map. Australia wasn't on its own, you could get to it from Japan and South America, which connected to Hawaii and North America. Plus more link places to the other continents would love to have that map for a board game, so much more possibilities.
