I'd leave Through in War, but do like the idea of having an escalation of calls - through (basic) double through (intermediate) and critical through (advanced)
Seconded, without being able to combine Through with other skills it becomes a bit redundant on its own. However, the suggested progression would need changing, if only because it would make 'critical through' cheaper than standard 'critical'. Perhaps if you needed 'double through' and 'critical' before you could purchase the final stage.

Obviously being gifted in life I am going to argue the through being moved to life. My points being. 1) Backstab is in life. 2) Joe's (krull's) point in reverse. From what he said makes more sense from being "school of hard knocks" than a military discipline stabbing people in the back past their armor... 3) School of war is too big anyway. Number of skills in each of the schools, war has the most by far. Aside from that, not too arsed, got enough to buy without getting side tracked with another skill. I would object to double through, critical through going to school of war. Sever, Critical and crush not enough for you war peeps???

I agree that backstab belongs in life because that's something you'd have learned avoiding straight up fights. Through, however, can be done face to face which means you'd have learned it in one on one fights against armour. Also, the whole point of the school of War is that it's the best for combat, the big hitting skills aren't supposed to be shared out in the same way that we don't get any business, stealth or bigger world skills (navigation, beast lore). If School of Life contains the abilities to drop the hardest tanks without needing stealth while also giving you life benefits of sneaking, poison resistance etc then I'd argue an imbalance.
One more note, if you want critical, crush and sever then as gifted you currently have to spend 114 xp and still only get one per day. I wouldn't worry about anyone charging you with that particular combo any time soon

Other than maybe the mad shaman and his charge would be incrediably slow and massively hindered by things like small ruts in the ground, or low hills, small rocks, ANY woodland or stairs etc... so you're quite safe on that front I like the idea of making Backstab something that has levels because i think it's always nice to work your way towards something however that will make it more expencive in terms of xp spend than just blatting the current 15 xp on it and mean that those gifted in the school of life wouldn't be able to get insta killl at start.

I think that we should leave backstab as is. It's expensive as is and if someone wants to come in the game with it, so be it. It's not quite an instant kill, you can survive with medical help and it's a once a day skill. I can think of other instant kills that work well. With high PC fatality rates you cannot be working to buy something for 2 or 3 games. Add the fact the games are six months apart and you have a new and unusual form of cruelty that should be outlawed by the UN. Life is about being sneaky War is war. Both have merit and if 'through' appeals to both Life and War why not have it in both?

Ok, as to where Through belongs, I agree, why not have it in War and in Life: one represents martial prowess and training (fighting well), the other represents the hard leaned realisation and practise of bypassing an opponents superior protection (fighting dirty). It wouldn't be the only skill to appear in multiple schools.
I don't entirely agree that it becomes redundant on its own: It doesn't damage the valuable armour that the carrion-crows/corpse-robbers/looters want. If someone has a few points of armour on the vitals a couple of (single) hits through the armour will do more damage to the vitals than a couple of doubles taking the armour down first, and with only 2 points of armour two through hits equal two doubles - and again, your loot is intact.

I would say leave things as they are with the changes in the system, Life people need not worry about Through.
