Just got a fax back from a quote request to Ronseal. They no longer make Isoflex for the UK market. I'm trying to sort something out with their marketing department but to make it worth their while I'm fairly sure we'd have to have a hefty bulk order to make it worth their while. They are still exporting, but only selling to the export market in complete batches. So in the meantime I'd suggest getting to your local B&Q pdfq.

Not that I use the stuff on my weapons (don't need to), but is it a European wide ban/decision? If not then couldn't folks just order it from Europe?

I've been talking to Ronseal for a while now and there will be some sort of limited availability of Isoflex. They originally announced last year that they would not supply anyone outside the UK but then they caved in to demand and now they've made the same decision for the UK but I'm sure we'll get some concession from them although it won't be on the shelves of any shops.

There are some alternatives but none of them have the staying power of Isoflex they look good to start with but they all crack and/or peel in a relatively short time. If you only expect a 6 months to a year lifespan of your weapon then some of the plasticote and polyurethane alternatives will be fine but nothing lasts long term like Isoflex

Is that based on your opinion Sean or any actual testing?

Based on fifteen years of frustration trying to get away from Isoflex!

Don't get me wrong, I hate Isoflex. It's unhealthy to use (though it's completely harmless once it's set), It's expensive, difficult to store and it yellows horribly as it ages. I've tried so many different finishes over the years but I always end up coming back to Isoflex because it lasts so well and it sticks to latex better than any other product I've tried (and I've tried lots of different formulations!)

Every now and then someone will come up with somethign that they think is new and untried and declare how great it is and along with everyone else I'll give it a go (or another go as in many cases) but so far I've always been dissapointed with the long term results. Latex will stretch to seven times it's original length without breaking but nothing will keep up with it. I know it only flexes to 1.5 to 2 times it's length in a normal weapon but even this defeats most laquers and finishes including Isoflex but it seems to have the best 'staying power' of anything else I've tried.

There is a hope that Ronseal will make batches of Isoflex for us but they have a minimum of 1,500 litres for a batch but if we can get the resources to have a batch made then we can also ask for some formulation changes and get a better finish. I'm still talking to them!

I'm going to try some paint companies and see if they have something with similar properties to isoflex.  Might be worth a try.  I guess Sean M has probably tried it and it's good to hear (as I know he has tried) that there are "rather poor" alternatives to isoflex.   Guess we will be forced at some point to move away from it, although that will be a pain.  Sure will from my point of view, almost a disaster.

Time to necropost and say you can get Isoflex at B&Q. Go to the website and search for Isoflex to check your local store availability.

According the the makers (Performix), the "plasti dip" coating that Shelford uses instead of latex can stretch by a factor of 4.3 which, while less than latex's 6-7, does sound pretty good.

I suppose stretchability isn't everything though.

*ressurects thread*

looking through the plastidip website, im assuming that youare using the "soft coat" product?

http://www.plastidip.co.uk/index2.cfm?page=products&prodId=1

as that seems the most suitable. im currently repairing a couple of old swords and am up to the finishing stages. is plastidip becoming the industry standard for the uk now that isoflex is practically unavailable?

(the only isoflex product i have been able to find is their "liquid rubber". am i correct in thinking this is not a clear product but a black one?)

http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/sc-44-10163-isoflex-bitumen-paints.asp?iBrandID=56

sorry for ressurecting this thread (again) but i think that alot of people are still searching for answers

thanks in advance

dave
