Prod Prod...

I'm running out of weekends this year and the riddle of steel demands to be answered.

Same here

Hi folks...

Discussed this briefly with Andy last weekend, and I fear it's still somewhat up-in-the-air.

Part of me would love to run it this Autumn as planned, and I know that Andy and the rest of the team would be up for helping.

Factors against that are as follows:

* Though the actual building work on mine & Bridie's house is finished at last, we still have to decorate it (repaint bedrooms, as they have newly plastered & filled areas that used to be huge holes where the steel beams for the extension went in; re-tile & re-floor bathroom; tile & paint new kitchen; finish painting new lounge; finish painting new studio space, including the mezzanine level above; and oil & varnish the new floors, stairs, bookcases, window-frames, & exterior trim). We're also still waiting for the carpenter to build in a load of desk & cupboard space in the studio, which is still full of stuff-in-boxes. All this means that our focus is still very much on the house ATM, and it'd be tricky to take a month+ off that to organise & make stuff for HT.

* I'm now working full-time, so I have less leisure time than I used to, and less opportunity to just take a month+ off my freelance work (I've already used up all my day job holiday time for this financial year).

* I'm currently unenthusiastic about LRP in general. For me, HT has always been probably slightly more stressful than enjoyable to run -- don't get me wrong, I DO enjoy running it, a lot, but it does require a stack of preparation and then approximately 72 hours in which I always have at least 6 things on my "MUST BE DONE IMMEDIATELY" mental to-do list, and as soon as one of them gets done I add another one, so I don't ever get a chance to relax for more than a few minutes during the event. I don't think that my being unenthusiastic about LRP would make running it significantly more stressful, or significantly less enjoyable (since HT is so very much full of all the stuff that does make me enthusiastic about LRP), but it does make me less inclined to go through that stuff in the 1st place...

I do think that the lack of LRP-enthusiasm will pass, eventually. I don't plan to go to very many LRP events this year (probably just 2 of the next 3 Maelstroms, plus Outlore, plus a Freebooters Alliance event in August, plus Riftworld in Autumn... maybe the odd Refuge... OK, that might still be a lot). I'm not sure that it's fair either to me or to you guys for me to organise an HT when I'm not enthusiastic about LRP, though. So, unless things change on one or more of the above factors -- like, me suddenly getting more enthusiastic, plus the house stuff all coming together in a big way (which it might, in a couple of weeks, when the desks and cupboards and stuff get put in to the studio, and we can at least tidy up), I don't think it's fair to either me, or the rest of the team, or you guys, to run HT this year. Apologies for the uncertainty, and the lack of a date.

s'cool dude. We've all been in the 'Larp, meh' position and fully appreciate that the fun of running events isn't the relaxing kind of fun.

End of the day I'd prefer to wait for a good one rather than playing something you felt obliged to do.

What Jon said.

Its supposed to be fun, not an obligation. Real life is always more important.

When you come bursting back on the scene full of HT enthusiasm, I shall do my level best to actually make it to an event instead of just saying "Yeah, one day I'll do HT". Any delays just give me more time to get my abs into a state where I am willing to display them in that fur bikini I keep threatening to show up in.

That's fair enough Ian, I know how much effort you put in to it so it needs to be something that you can be enthusiastic about, doesn't mean I won't badger you about HT 4 in 2010 though ;-)

I understand, Ian. I have settled with doing things that I would do myself anyway, and if anyone shows up, why that's just dandy.

It's a reasonable rule to say: He who sees the need, this one does the deed.

So maybe instead of prodding, some people need to be shouldering burdens.

Yep I'd happily run one rather than prod Ian, just can't see many people shouldering the burden of coming over here to play it, that and the distinct lack of epic sites to run on on the 3 x 7 miles that Guernsey occupies.

And of course the fact that Ian, Bridie and co do such a good job that I know I wouldn't be able to match them.

Would be willing to run, even have epic sites, but I think Dundee would be just to far away for most people.

Having suffered ref burn out in the past, all i can advised is Ian plays when he has fun, after all it's a game, and everyone should enjoy it.

Seeing I won't see you this year though, I hope everyone enjoys their summer of LARPing and other things

Well, the Free Companions had a fan table at a minor sci-fi convention in the SF Bay Area, and we got a fair amount of interest.

Of course, I know from experience that if I gather 12 names, that doesn't mean that 12 people will show up for any particular event. I would be happy if 2-4 showed up regularly for the next year.

The main thrust would be LARP or boffer combat. I have some ideas that might impel a storyline and characterization without much work on the part of the organizer.

By and large, larpers in the US (by which I mean boffer fighters) don't do "role-play" as such and a typical event is a "ditch battle" (set-piece) in the middle of a grassy, civilized city park. Anything that I can do to break away from that mold will, I think, be an accomplishment.

I'll keep you all posted on the gruesome developments.
