Well put, Erf. Organizers shouldn't feel the need to apologize for making a profit. I'd like to see more people able to make a living out of the hobby.
It's odd, innit? If you make a latex sword for someone, or a posh frock, they don't dream of having a go at you because you charge them the going rate for your time.
I don't think I've ever heard a bad word said about HQ by a regular player there, which I think speaks volumes. Almost any other long-running game has a stack of dissatisfied customers only too willing to moan about what they perceive as the flaws with the system they left. All I ever hear about HQ, though, is good.
It's not for me, I suspect -- by all accounts it's damned good at what it does, but what it does isn't really what I want out of LRP any more. Still, I don't think anyone should be criticizing it on value-for-money grounds -- even the most expensive LRP is exceptionally good value for money when you compare it to virtually any other form of entertainment or hobby.

| Actually Ian , when I was trading I lost track of the number of people who would complain about the cost of Latex kit, while pointing out that they could make it themselves. Maybe it's a human condition thing?

markst, thanks for the reply. Knowing that HQ is for a small number of people makes the price all the more understandable. We need at least 80 participants to go break-even and thus mostly need about 100 participants if we want to get enough money to invest in new costumes etc.
And of course I can't only judge by the photo's, that's why I asked for more info.
Personally I don't care about beds, at larps in Belgium I sleep in my IC tent, but the included meals is a very nice to have over here. If I would scratch that and keep the price I would have problem making people participate. Problem here in Belgium is that we spoiled our participants so much over the years that some don't even come if there are no beds.
Erf, about the price. NPO vs business shouldn't make a difference in price. I mean, when I go to an event I don't care if it's an NPO or a business, as long as it's 'good' and the price is "reasonable".
Best example is Avatar (in Belgium), it's run by an NPO and it's bad, while in Germany a business runs the same kind of larp for the same price and it's considered 'awesome'. People are actually more expecting when a larp is done by a company since they get paid for it, while in an npo nobody get's paid for it.
ps: thinking very much of attending a Heroquest :-)

Andy Rimmer (6/6/2006) Actually Ian , when I was trading I lost track of the number of people who would complain about the cost of Latex kit, while pointing out that they could make it themselves. Maybe it's a human condition thing?
Did they actually complain (i.e. "That's way too expensive, you shouldn't be making a profit out of the hobby") or did they just say they couldn't afford it?
But yeah, you're right. I blame the humans, mostly. Closely followed by the customers.

| You can def turn up to play HQ on your own. I would play one of the £20 basic games if i hadnt played before- there will be lots of new players plus a few regulars who want to play a "basic" style event. Its allways fun to have friends along at a game, but then if u r on ur own u will more likely make new friends so..... Im sure if anyone wanted to come from abroad Markst would make arrangements to make it easy for that person. ps beds are good, tents with inflatable matress and no one else snoring and farting-better Cirith

Mostly comments like "It's disgusting how much you lot make on these things" or general comments about how having a weapons stall at the Gathering is a license to print money or how traders prey on the hobby to make easy money.

Outrageous! Ye gods, you'd have thought that anyone who'd ever tried making their own weaponry would realize how time-consuming it is -- it's not like LRP weapon makers are on a decent hourly rate....
