Some people feel quite strongly that IC rewards should only be for IC actions. This tends to be a simulationist point of view, i.e. only things which happen in game should affect in game things, metagaming is bad. Other people think that IC rewards like 'getting harder' are fine to give out for OOC actions like monstering; many of these people (including me) think that you should have some kind of IC excuse as to why this is the case, but the training system you outline sounds like a good IC excuse. Some people don't care whether there's an IC excuse or not; this tends to be a 'gamist' position, playing the LARP like a strategy/tactics game rather than an immersive world experience.

I encourage people to award IC rewards for OOC actions as long as there is a convincing narrative which explains why the character IC is getting the stuff.

Some people (well, I, for one) don't consider XP to be an 'IC reward'.
IC rewards are things that are tangible to a character, such as the treasure you stole from the dragon, the knighthood bestowed by the king, or the opportunity to spend a month at the Elevated Temple Of Pacifistic But Highly Dangerous Ninja Monks.
XP, character points, whatever, are a mechanism that allow the Player to adjust some facet of their character in a unilateral manner, to better suit what elements of play they may enjoy. This may not necessarily be reflected in the IC preferences of the character. "Grr, I want to build a better Fireball, but I end up getting so angry that I berserk into my enemies with a sword instead."

Any attempt to relate XP to some notion of IC 'experience' is doomed to end up mired in flange.

I see, we're actually starting to touch upon the fundamental flaws of the XP concept. Character advancement should supplement roleplay rather than being an expected pay off from it, I hold that roleplaying is it's own reward or rather produces it's own rewards. Ravensbourne has illustrated this rather well.

XP is a blanantly OOC system and there is little reason it cannot be used as a reward for services to the game as a whole.

On the subject of whether this set up could work, sure, back at uni we run two linears every Sunday. We do drop OOC between linears to eat and hit the bar but thats hardly a nessesity.

Its not so much as well that we're giving xp for not playing anyway. The players have to negotiate IC to learn a service that they would've just "paid for" OOC in downtime anyway. We're just offering to let them have the skill at a lower xp cost if they negotiate it IC.

Numbers is the one potential drawback

Im guessing that we're going to be looking at smaller figures (though it would be great to have 40 or so people at each event I don't think that will happen). Essentially I think we were looking at 20-25 or in total.

We'll have about 4 or 5 NPC mercs to start off with, plus the players. The first linear comes along, so we get 6-8 people on the party, plus about the same monster wise, which leaves 4 or 5 NPCS and about the same number of players at the camp. There might be more, there might be less. Players will undoubtedly do some of their own trading of offering to do training there so there's less of a need to have NPCs doing it.

Its really just that on day long linears, its a lot harder to do person to person roleplaying. You're wandering along on your linear, and whilst you can talk to people whilst you're walking half the time you're getting interrupted by an encounter, or people dropping OOC whilst the monsters set up etc

Just like the idea of there being a "chill out" area where people can do the more interpersonal plot stuff. Keep them on their toes mind so its not boring. Also means that people who don't want to go on long walks can do some Fantasy LRP
