| officially to remove dangerous weapons from the hands of teenage thugs. Though in reality its all these psychotic law-abiding, 32 in a 30 zone speeding types, that end up handing in their crappy souveniers from grown up countries like spain or turkey.

But wait: If I got over 30 in a 30 zone then even with the magic of ABS I really will increase my stopping distance and thus my chance of splatting someone's child. Having been doing a bit of driving round the world, I reckon we should probably change the speed limits to 55mph and just change the signs to kph. Going at a tonne would be much easier then and would also be relatively fuel efficient.
There is only overconfidence and terror.

So going faster means better fuel efficiency (thus cheaper travel), but greater danger of accidents (thus greater risk of loss of life). So you'd really go for convenience and cost over safety? Or have I utterly misread your post?

Or have I utterly misread your post? Sorry, I missed a step in my logic. My bad. I was being mean about people who go too fast in urban zones and extending my logic to the motorways where people do 80+ on a regular basis. 70 is actually much faster than most of the rest of the world and the roads are much smaller. (Although the driving does tend to be a bit more predictable, which is good.)

Ian Sturrock (6/1/2006) As we all know, though, far more kitchen knives are used in stabbings than are Batleths or Samurai Swords. I guess the only option is to do what some senior doctors recommend, and ensure that kitchen knives all have rounded points.
My stepmum was one of those that proposed that. It's very sensible, actually - the point on the knife is barely ever used in cooking, and when it is (for holding meat in place, for example) a carving fork could easily be substituted. Most bread knives have rounded ends, so why not other knives? A slashing wound is far less often fatal than a stabbing one.

Her two pence, anyway. And mine, for what it's worth.

I'd kind of assumed that the people who proposed the ban just didn't cook very often...
I regularly use the points on my kitchen knives to start off a cut. For example, if cutting a softish fruit or vegetable that has a slightly harder skin, such as a tomato, if you poke the knife point into it just prior to cutting, sliding the point out and up again in the same motion as the blade comes down (hard to describe, easier to show), you minimize the resistance to cutting that the skin and pressure cause, allowing you to slice without bursting the thing & getting juice everywhere.
Another example would be using a paring knife to joint a raw chicken, where I typically use the point as part of the process of separating the legs from the body.
Another would be when cutting a pizza, cake, or other baked food, where starting the cut with the point is easier. In this case I tend to make virtually the whole cut with the point and very tip of the knife, 'cos often the food is on a ceramic plate and I don't want to dull the whole length of the blade by cutting straight downwards and against the plate.

I saw an 'Asi' (Kraut for 'Asozial' or antisocial) guy, wearing the new skinhead t-shirt of choice (Fußball freundschaft? Nein Danke!) on the tram today, with not one but two klingon tattoos, on either shoulder. Oh how i sniggered too quietly for him to hear...
