I have this odd idea for a LRP.

I'd like to do some sort of Art Deco style Sci-fi. A kind of Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers affair with some Hugo Gernsback stylings.

On direction I these thoughts:

A freeform PvP, where the player groups take on a kind of 'kingdoms of Mongo' role. Her they vie with each other for the attentions of the Emperor. The event would have a number of achievable objectives such as exotic treasures, mysteries, etc culminating in a reveal, where the groups try to out do each other for the best tribute. There will, of course, be forfeits for the losers.

The PvP element would involve protecting your finds from your rivals. A smallish crew would do set-up and strike, provide colour, and portray the Emperor and his guards for the reveal.

I'm a little foggy about the game mechanics, but I'd like combat to reflect the 'two-fisted' pulp style of those old '30s serials. I'd also like guns to be all shiny and fins and spiky bits, sort of nerf guns with added foam bits and an overdose of silver metallic paint.

Visually, something between the serials, Barbarella and the Flash Gordon movie. Markedly different races and cultures, following a very clichéd fashion such as the Molepeople of Subterrainia or the Eaglepeople of Eyrion.

While I'm not looking for an overtly comedy tone, I would like it to have a 'light' tone. I'd like rivalries rather than blood-feuds, complex revenge plots rather than open warfare. Of course, that doesn't mean it can't be nasty.

I have no clear thoughts as to the logistics for this, so at the moment I'm just putting it up here for discussion. All thoughts and comments appreciated.

Love it, where do I sign up?

Not sure if that particular genre lends itself well to PVP though? Pulp & Sci-fi/romance tends to emphasis macho heroism and moustache twiddling evil, your more likely to capture and taunt a rival than shive them up outside of the toilet (not that that's happened recently ).

I'm not looking for shiv, but rivalries, duels and internecine goings-on. War is a waste of resources you could otherwise put to use pleasing the Emperor.

A pile of corpses is unlikely to impress, it just means one less tribute. If all your resources have gone on making that pile, then you will have nothing to give him either, and that just means grief for you. Better to do over your rivals by nicking their tribute, or buggering up their ability to grab one of their own.

Cool

BTW I'm not suggesting I want random muggings outside of the toilets, mearly that in a PVP enviroment there will be player deaths at the hands of other players at some point. You just need to decide when, where and how you envison that happening. Death (expect for the bad guy) isn't something common to the Genre.

Going to get back to polishing my skull cap now.

True enough. However, that heroism is the interjected hero and his companions. Before Flash, Buck or Carter, the 'kingdoms' are vying with each other. In the eighties Flash Gordon movie, Barin decries Vultan for stealing their tribute to Ming while his men buried their dead on Frigia. It is that side of the story I'm looking to have. The rival squabbling kingdoms.

The PvP 'shiv in the dark' is something I can cope with, particularly if it goes with thefts, spying and general scheming. But the tribute is all. After all, if you wipe out everybody else, the Emperor can only see you as a threat. If the Emperor's power was in doubt, you wouldn't be placating him with tributes.

Sounds great, but why not just run Flash Gordon? And before you ask I will not play Ming.

Whereas I will very happily play Ming.

A Flash Gordon game would be big fun.
