| Tart This of course assumes that everyone knows exactly what game they are playing, and agree's to it's rules. As i've said above I think lots of people have very differnent ideas of what is ok, and what isn't. Alot of LRP events/games do have set rules on costume/ OOCness/ cans in view etc. Maybe these rules/guidelines/minimum standards should be pushed more.

Bolkins (7/27/2006) Strongly disagree. It's the idea of making a reasonable amount of effort to (re)create a fantasy world that gives the hobby any sort of validity as a grown-up activity. Otherwise you're no different from a bunch of six-year-olds "playing Dogtanian" in the schoolyard, and any passers-by who spot you and take the piss are perfectly justified in doing so.
But thats what we are doing. We're all playing pretend, its just that our swords are more expensive, and probably safer.
I don't own a tankard, I find drinking out of a pewter tankard to be very uncomfortable, I don't like the way it makes the beer pewter-flavoured, and I tend to get sore throats afterwards. I did have a nice wooden cup, but that was awkward (no handle=pain to carry round) and some twat nicked it anyway. So I tend to use the nice plastic pint-glasses or beer bottles to drink out of. (incidently, anyone know where I could find a reasonably priced, wooden pint mug (or thereabouts, prefereably bigger, rather than smaller? with a handle, of course)
As to the Art versus Game, I've always thought that the artform closest to LRP is pro-wrestling. People in silly costumes, with daft names? Check. Disputes settled with phys-repped combat, with rules of its own which make little sense in the real world? Check. Underhanded politicking to give a combatant an unfair advantage? Check.
LRP is... Sports Entertainment!
Costume hippy, live and let live, peace and love for all, man!

Not sure about wooden tankards, but it's relatively easy to find pitch lined leather tankards. I was at a whole bunch of English Heritage sites this weekend, most of the gift shops there were selling them - though you'll likely find them cheaper where there are fewer tourists!
You're entitled to your opinion as long as you realise it's wrong.

There was a chap at Maelstrom a few Maelstroms back who made Pint wooden Tankards. For the life of me I can;t remember his name... Anyone recall?

Mr Sandwich (7/28/2006) I don't own a tankard, I find drinking out of a pewter tankard to be very uncomfortable, I don't like the way it makes the beer pewter-flavoured, and I tend to get sore throats afterwards.Same kind of thing happens to me when I drink from a tankard. Tends to result in memory loss, headaches and dehydration. Ever thought of an earthenware mug?

On this point (and I thought to mention it earlier) but aren't the pewter tankards we all use an anachronism anyway? I know all the ones I've ever seen/used tend to be from the 1970's. quite often engraved with a date!
And so is Lager when I come to think about it.

| Pewter tankards have been around for quite a while, but I suppose one would look out of place at a Dark Age or Viking event. Also top tip: Try and find a pint and a half tankard. I had one in the past and didn't realise it held more than a pint. The bar staff at a fest just kept filling it up assuming it was just a one pint tankard.

Tart (7/27/2006)
"your coke can spoils my immersion"
"yeh, well, your RUBBER FUCKING SWORD spoils mine"
I can't find ways to phrase what I want to say without sounding like an anally-retentive freak, but I'll just go along with that.
I find this kind of argument completely spurious. We have to use rubber / foam and latex swords instead of metal ones for safety reasons. They are made to look as much like real swords as possible.
Seriously, if you can't roleplay due to modern items being in the setting, go to re-enactment.
Blah, blah, same old pointless slanging match
If you want it all totally IC, do re-enactment!
If you don't want to phys rep things, do tabletop!
It's childish, it's petty, it's old, it's boring, and it's entirely unproductive.
I love immersive events, they're great - the better the quality of the costume, props and set-dressing, the less people talk OOC, the more everything looks, sounds and feels like the fantasy world it's supposed to represent, the more fun I'll have. Some things that look OOC are unavoidable, of course. However, where we can avoid the OOC creeping in to our shared fantasy, I'd prefer to try and do so. The easier it is to keep something OOC out, the more it'll irritate me if it creeps in.
Does someone drinking out of a coke can annoy the hell out of me? No, not really.
Every attempt to raise the bar and create a more immersive event generates a flood of whinging from people who can't be arsed making any effort - that's what really annoys the hell out of me.
