I think you misunderstand me. I'm saying take it as seriously as you like *in the moment* but be aware of what you really are doing - i.e. make believe games - and don't be precious about it.

To use your acting analogy: Play your scene as you want, but when someone calls "cut", or soemthing goes wrong, don't try and take that scene beyond the moment. You are an actor on a stage playing a heroic warrior, not actually a heroic warrior.

Good actors can do this easily, bad actors cannot.

****EDIT****

To clarify:
I just think it is possible to play something seriously (a game, a role) without having to take it seriously from an OOC perspective. i.e. You can step out of the role, and back into it as needs be. You can play a game to the best of your abilities (taking it seriously for everyone involved) without getting all wound up if you lose. as so forth.
that make more sense?

Another factor is respect - do you respect your fellow players enough to keep their environment as IC as possible.

Getting wound up by costume thats slightly non-authentic is anal. Not making the effort to keep things as IC as possible is inconsiderate. There's a difference.

I take my fun seriously, if you don't then y'know - thats a shame.

Because, what you just said? If you said that to, say an Actor they would be within their rights to point out that if they didn't take it seriously all those films/plays/tv shows you like?
They would all be shit. All of them.

I don't want my LRP events to be shit, so I take it seriously.

Surely it defeats the object of 'fun' if you take it too seriously?

And a quick newsflash: Not taking things seriously doesn't automatically make them shit. Only you can make them shit by thinking they are.

"As IC as possible"? That is purely a subjective thing, surely? As is the percieved effort to achieve it.

Do you respect your fellow players enough not to ruin their event by whinging about OOC comments/food etc?

Somebody or other! (7/27/2006)
I sometimes don't bother wearing a costume because afterall I'm not looking at myself. Hey everyone else can just roleplay that I've got one on. If the other players moan I'll get all upset and say they're spoling my fun and my fun is the most important! I'll drink out of a lager can because it would take too long for me to pour it into a tankard, anyway I've got big hands so they'll cover it up. I don't care if I talk loudly out of chracter to a mate I've not seen for a while even if it's in the middle of a tense bit in the plot.

So it all comes down to not playing a game together.

Put ya booze in an IC vessel and I wont wee on your head when you're asleep. It's cooperation really.

I wouldnt usually mention it in the game, but I would mention it afterwards. But if you dont respect me enough to hide your bloody beer cans (and come on, it takes *seconds* to pour a beer into a tankard), then why should I respect you anyway?

My expectations would be different at different events, no-one at Blood Red Roses would drink from the can. But people do it all the time at events like the Gathering.

This of course assumes that everyone knows exactly what game they are playing, and agree's to it's rules. As i've said above I think lots of people have very differnent ideas of what is ok, and what isn't.

Where there is a hard rule it's easier to judge of course - like cheating in combat.

Personally I think it's more down to how anal you are going to be.

because the drinking from a can thing is beinganal? You are willing to forgive all sorts of anachronisms, and not real objects, so why not that one?

Plus it assumes the person *owns* a tankard in the first place.
