Over the months of Rule7 and the years of Pagga, we’ve talked about nearly everything we can LRP related. During that time, I’ve often heard the phrase “it’s just a game” toted about for reasons why a person shouldn’t take the game too seriously or for reasons why a person was acting OOC in an IC environment. I’m sure that naught but the terminally confusion would dispute that LRP is a game – but its status as a game really a good enough reason not to play it to the enjoyment of other players. Just because it is a game does that mean you shouldn’t act like grown ups whilst playing?
Yes, because we do this for fun, everybody has a right to enjoy themselves. But don’t use that as an excuse to be inconsiderate to other players.
- Wear your masks if you have them (unless of course it’s a medical emergency or you’ve considered others playing around you first)
- Attempt to stay in character all the time you are IC
– Realise that the game isn’t about you, it’s about us.
It's just a game - play nice.

Huzzah! I hate the use of "it's just a game" as an argument for spoiling things for other people.
If the game is not important to you, then why play it?

Does it have to be important to be enjoyable?

| I agree. "Its just a game" should not be used as an excuse for being crap. I dont like wearing masks, I cant breathe in them. So, I dont play characters that would need a mask. I dont play them without a mask because 'its just a game'.

MarkH (7/25/2006) Does it have to be important to be enjoyable?
Nope. But if it's not sufficiently important that you're willing to follow the rules, just going and getting pissed in a field somewhere is a cheaper option that won't disrupt things for other people...

Surely it boils down to how much people care about the game?
eg at school I was crap at football as a)i didnt care b)i was crap at it and c)i didn't care.
so people who DID care would get very annoyed at me "not taking it seriously", even though I couldn't give a monkeys.
So while people CHOOSE to turn up to an LRP (as opposed to being forced to by teachers) they may have a very different view of why they are there, and where the fun is.
So they may think "it's just a game" is a perfectly valid excuse for drinking out of cans in an IC area, or dropping OOC, or whatever.
Personally I think LRP is more a social event where a game is beign played, rather than just a game. i.e. there is more going on (normally) than jsut a game.

Gawd Bless Pagga. Wonder how long it'll remain there.
LRP isn't 'just' a game - it can be a game, and often contains 'game-like' elements (which are important) but it's not just a game.
Perdo Vim 200?

Gawd bless ya Pagga, and Gawd bless ya Meister Marks.
LRP is a tool? I’ve met some LRPers who are tools most definitely.

Simon Marks (7/25/2006) Is this a good time to post my (once standard) link? http://www.pagga.net/cgi-bin/vBulletin_v3/showthread.php?t=8024

LRP isn't 'just' a game - it can be a game, and often contains 'game-like' elements (which are important) but it's not just a game.I knew that was coming... However Simon, given that some people think LRP is just a game, the question is - is that an acceptable excuse to be a bit lame? Given that you dont think LRP is a game, presumably you dont accept "Its just a game" as an excuse for crapness, and if anyone used that excuse on you, you would respond by saying "No, it isnt."
