James,
You added to the discussion, though... wouldn't it have been better for you to actively become part of the solution, and post a new game idea or something? :p
As for me, it's LRP all the way!
Anyway, at least half of us are at least half-joking at least half of the time... and as a result we have an amusing, if (admittedly) mostly pointless thread (although if it provides a belated education to the young, that's a pleasant side benefit). What more did you expect of Mugger's Alley? Just don't read this section, if you're looking for interesting, constructive chat about the Future of LRP as Art or something.

Ian Sturrock (10/6/2006) Some of us still have gaffer tape burns and burning Evo-stick lung damage. We fought and died in two LRP wars for you young punks, and "Oooh, it's better in search engines" is all you can come out with when you want to change the name of our hobby. Sorry. Start your own hobby, and call it what you like. :p
It LARP I say, LARP damn you!!! LARP with a fucking A!
It was LARP when I started way back in the mists of time, and yes I remember the gaffa tape weapons and the evo-stick lung and we considered that a luxery compared to the sticks we used before. I remeber the suspicion that greeted the introduction of Latex and the feeling that it would never last, and it was LARP then and its LARP now...
The clubs I started in were LARP clubs, the games I played were LARP's and whilst I may not be able to trace my LARPing liniage back to the very start, those that started the clubs were I began started at the very begining with Treasure Trap which was of course LARP!
In the begining it was LARP (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treasure_Trap) even today the grandaddy is LARP (see here http://www.dur.ac.uk/treasure.trap/intro.php) and around here it is and will always be LARP.
I recall with clarity the first time I heard the term "LRP" and wondered what the hell it was... by then I'd been LARPing for ten years. Turns out the "LRP" is a curious northern term for a well established hobby that's been going for over twenty years! Here in the south its LARP as it always has been, and to be honest around here we only use the term "LRP" on occasion to humour visitors from the northern wastes. I can only assume that the term "LRP" was used in relation to LARP due to some inability to spell or speak english with a proper accent.
Its time to set the record straight... its LARP pure and simple... repeat after me;
I LARP.
I am a LARPer.
I go LARPing.

Wikipedia ain't the be-all and end-all... if "LARP" is actually some weird southern jessie term for LRP (which would make a certain amount of sense I suppose), it's no wonder that Treasure Trap was the first LRP game -- it being in the North, and all. At least, everyone who went to Peckforton when I was there called it "LRP"....

Don't you fucking try and label "LARP" as a southern term.
When I started playing back in the day (yes, with Gaffa) it was LRP, and I was in the south. As were many many other people I know who use the correct term, LRP.
Maybe LARP is a localised southern phrase. From one of those inbred west country villages probably...

| As Heroquest and Mythlore (both 2nd Gen systems- if TT is considered 1st Gen) where founded and run in and around Gloucester (which is in the South West) and Labrynth(also a 2nd Generation game- but based in Kent) all called themselves LRP systems, I can't see how it could be a Southern thing either-so at what point did Feral and co start calling it LARP, cos I can't think of much down South that's older than these three systems.
