If opinions are being looked at as to what roleplaying "is" I'll use a simple example for my 2 grey cells worth. There have been many tv shows that do a basic illustrative version of roleplay by using the concept someone as someone as someone.

Red Dwarf - Bodyswap - Rimmer "as" Lister (and vice versa)

or a hybrid like when a symbiote goes body hopping all the live long day having ben reilly "as" carnage peter parker "as" carnage brock "as" venom ad infinitum.

So when I play someone I play me "as" them. Admitedly this usually involves large accidental explosions, a shift a great distance away from the plot and my death either by the aforementioned explosion or another players frustation at my involvement in said explosion. BUT IN MY DEFENCE IF YOU DONT WANT ME TO PRESS THE BUTTON THE DON'T MAKE IT BIG RED AND SHINY!

Sorry. but that's my version of a character as that's quintessentially me. If I don't push the button it'll explode anyway and I'll have missed my calling . . . my fun. And (yeah I know many conjunctions starting sentences but hey listen to call center workers on the phone and tell me they make sense) there will be that one time, that one beautiful moment when I push the button and something that isn't me will blow up. On that day I shall sit beaming with pride as, that one day, I sucessfully did me playing Agent M. Double O Two and a bit. Left at the junction and it's on the right.

Think about it we always say "when I was a fighter and I . . . "

So it's the you "as" a fighter hybrid.

Or the It's based on [insert existing character reference here]

So its the you "as" Matt Tracker, Drizzt, Gandalf, me or you (in a play yourself - tell me you've tried it - I have and it's . . . educational.)

I'm wittering now but in a childish bastardised way all roleplayed characters can be described in this way. Consider it a first principle. Or Not. Do what you would do as you doing what you would do in this situation. Roleplay.

Roleplay is something thats completey acceptable between consenting adults and if I want to wear her underwear and call myself susan who are you to criticise?

*thinks*

Depicting a set of ideals. You can of course roleplay without realising it, or without titling it as much. Indeed if we're going to get into post-structuralist wankery you can't stop role-playing, given that your entire life is an imitation of observed culture.

If it helps, i'll throw my opinion too....

Role play is too varied to define, and the only way you can roleplay badly, is if you go out of character in a way which ruins the atmosphere of those around you, thusly, there is -NO- Right way of RPing or Wrong way.

The way I roleplay is simple....

I think of the character, I write up his back ground (cos its fun and I know my friends enjoy reading it.) and then creat the costume. (because it fun and looks good.)
Once the costume is completed I put it on, take into account my characters back ground and go into the world which is put before me.

A monster runs screaming towards my character, I don't -think- about what the character will do....
As I already know what to do...

Example, I make a character called Bob, he's a fighter and lived on a farm before joining the army.
I do not think "Oh Bob would attack this monster cause it's evil." I know he'd do it.

Or

I make a mage called Frank, and he's a coward, a monster charges him, and I don't "think" he'd run away, I know he'd run away.....

I'm leaving the rails...

My overall point is, Roleplay in the sence of Live Action Role Play, in my point of view, should not be something that people can say "Oh he's a bad actor therefore he's a bad RPer." as I've met actors and RPer's of the same standards.
LARP is something that is designed to be fun, immersive yes, but fun in the process.

I'd sooner hear someone say "That was fun." than.. "I'm nackered from all the thinking i've had to do."

Yes everyone can talk about the philosophy of LARP, but at the end of the day...

Its just a game, and the only rule is:
Don't take the piss, unless it's funny.

Aerby said:
"it's experimental magic that really should be touched only by the like of...nope not even Yuri could deal with this magic... this was bad.
As I watche a series of cataclysmic rebounding explosions in all directions, bar the demons."

Me:
"Whoops, I do apologies to all whom I put on deaths door..."
