"Hard Contact" by Karen Traviss - A Star Wars novel from a Soldier's point of view. No whiney Jedi wannabe's, no one speaking in Yoda. It's a good book too.

I've read quite a few of his books, most recently and most unfortunately "Misspent Youth" (strangely prophetic since my time reading it was entirely misspent).

Plus points - seems to be 'culturally' right wing - which is nice, insofar as it's quite rare (most authors seem to just assume that in 20 years we'll all be amorphously English-Earthicans and that the internet will abolish cultural conflicts that have been consistent throughout recorded history). The suggestion that cultural segregation might be a good idea isn't one that's normally mooted, even thought it never really comes into the foreground.

Minus points - slightly annoying edge of Republican propaganda (at least it's a rarer flavour of propaganda), really heavy-handed in Misspent Youth (this is the book about why you hate Europe and Socialism and what you'd do if you were young again? Ok - but where's the spoonful of sugar?).

Recently started War Reporting for Cowards by Chris Ayres.  Absolutely marvellous, page-turning hilarity.  True stories of modern war just seem to lend themselves to this type of writing.

Somehow I'm not suprised at the number of Flashy readers here.

Currently devouring the Sister Fidelma series of murder mysteries, (now on The Monk That Vanished) and learning more about Medieval Ireland than I knew possible without doing a degree in it.

A book on Mucha and his works.

A book about wire wrapping and jewellery making techniques. As a result my fingers hurt and I have lots of small sharp bits of metal all stuck in my carpet.

I just started 'The Time Traveller's Wife' at lunchtime - not that impressed with it so far, but i'm only a few chapters in.

Just finished 'The Eight' by Katherine Neville yesterday. Good book, but you get sick of all the freaking chess references by the end and 'the big secret' isn't quite as big as you thought it would be.

And three days ago i finished 'Misfortune' by Wesley Stace which is bloody brilliant! Funny and poignant at the same time and full of nasty plotting families, murders and transvestites!
