Thanks. I'll see what Balor thinks too, then consider whether to ask the library to get it in.

I ought to post my updated "What are you reading" list I suppose:

The "Parker" novels by Richard Stark (aka Donald Westlake). Fast-moving contemporary noir featuring an amoral anti-hero. Been getting these out of the library, after picking one up on a whim; currently reading _Breakout_, which is excellent.

_Requiem Shark_ by Nicholas Griffin. This is a very good fictionalised account of life aboard Bartholomew Roberts's pirate ship.

_The Warrior Diet_ by Ori Hofmekler. I've been trying out a basic version of his diet (following the guidelines on his website) for about 3 months, so thought I ought to pick the book up 'cos (a) I'm sticking to a diet, for once, (b) I'm lean and well-muscled as a result, and (c) I have bags of energy & feel great. Recommended, so long as you're prepared to do some exercise (which I do anyway).

Riftworld: Rossar Kuug ("Clearly mad, because he thinks he's a Com-Trow Skirmisher" - Aela)
Hyborian Tales: Crew, cook, dogsbody, general labourer, toilet cleaner ("Dangerously overoptimistic ref" -- Tom Nowell)
Otherwise usually crew ("Quite spry & fit, & willing to wear a big costume & run around a lot" -- various event organisers)

The Great Stink by Clare Clark (I'm lying I've just finished it!)

A piece of murder mystery fiction set admidst the rebuilding of Victorian London's sewers.

Corruption, self-harm, betrayal and dog's fighting rats in the gin palaces of the London rookeries.

You'll learn more about shit than is comfortabe to know!

Also been reading "The Black Ajax" by George MacDonald Fraser a fictional history of Tom Molineaux, the black american pretender to the heavywieght boxing crown in the early 18th century, readers of Flashman will enjoy!

Cheers

Does the diet involve lots of dead animals?

Also, I've just been reading Freakonomics "http://www.freakonomics.com/" which is very interesting indeed. Compelling reasons why the models of self interest for the KKK and estate agents coincide and for the pressures that persuade people to cheat and of course how to detect this cheating. It is a bit short though which I found disappointing and sort of peters out towards the end. O/w top stuff and a solid 7/10.

There is only overconfidence and terror.

(Warrior Diet)

Not quite so many dead animals as you might imagine...

Here's a typical day's food for me:

Loads of water.

Breakfast: A carrot.

Loads of water.

Some aerobic exercise.

Loads of water.

Lunch: An apple.

Loads of water.

Some more exercise (aerobic or anaerobic)

Loads of water.

Snack: Bit of natural yoghurt, bit of ground ginger, bit of honey. Maybe some dates.

Loads of water.

Maybe some more exercise.

Dinner: Green salad. A big normal dinner (maybe 1.5 to 2x normal portion size). A load of nuts & seeds. A bit of chocolate.

I'm reading The Lords of the North by Cornwell, it's very similar to the Warlord Chronicles in style, but makes me want to whine at Sam Harber to run Vikings II.

Sounds like calorie control by another name to me. Admittadly, all diets are when you get down to it, otherwise you wouldn't lose weight!
Though It's odd that you eat your big meal at the end of the day, not at the start. Eating at the end of the day means you have lots of glucogen going round your system that you don't use (you are asleep) which then gets turned to fat. I guess though since you are eating sod all for most of the day though (i'd guess about 200 calories if that) you burn all that fat off during the day?

If you can't beat your computer at chess, try kickboxing.

It does run contrary to a lot of supposedly sensible dietary advice -- eat whatever you like (avoiding only heavily processed foods e.g. refined sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oil, etc.) in the evening & very little in the day. It works for me, though, and there is an impressive amount of science to back it up, too....

By the only measures that mean anything to me -- tightening my belt by about one notch every month or two (I will need to punch new holes in a couple of months if this keeps up), getting stronger and fitter, and feeling full of energy -- it's the dog's bollocks. I'm losing fat from my stomach, but if anything I'm putting on lean muscle mass, rather than losing it. And I no longer feel hungry in the day time -- or if I do, I eat a bit of fruit or raw veg, knowing that I'm going to be feasting on a stack of dinner a few hours later.

Oh, and of course if you do loads of exercise during the day (which is a reasonably important part of the diet), you end up using the big evening meal to replenish you. Plus you crap a lot of it out, given the amount of fiber in all that raw fruit & veg you eat in the daytime....
