The Plot Against America by Philip Roth - A child's-eye view of America in the early forties. But in this reality, Lindbergh became president and made a deal with the Axis powers to keep America out of the war. Dark and witty.

| Executive Orders by Tom Clancy. (I'm on holiday.) A gripping and well thought out polemic in which the author gives his thoughts on how the American Government should be run set in the aftermath of a disaster which has wiped out the government of the USA leaving only "an honest man" to run the place. Not to everyone's taste or politics, but I found it something to reflect on and something different.
There is only overconfidence and terror.

_Soldiers & Sherpas_ by Brummie Stokes -- an autobiog, concerning (as might be expected) Mr Stokes' experiences in the army and as a mountaineer. Pretty good stuff so far.
_Savage Tales of Solomon Kane_ by Robert E. Howard. Kane is the Puritan sword-and-sorcery hero Howard wrote about before his Conan phase. He chases murderers to darkest Africa, encounters sorcerous vengeance from beyond the grave in the Black Forest, and chastises Francis Drake for executing another sea dog. Also good stuff so far.
Assorted non-fiction books on science, medieval magic, SF, and writing.

The History Of Hell - Alice Turner. Whilst this is clearly someones postdoctoral thesis crudely chopped about for mass publication it is nonetheless a fascinating look at the development of hell throughout the ages and through various religions.
The Golden Bough - Sir James Frazer. Another thesis, this one from 1915 and rather unspecific dealing with a huge variety of pagan beliefs and legend. This is a huge read and has inspired me a lot..... problem is it is also a bit archaic and I've been reading it for about a year, usually when I have trouble sleeping.
Crusader (Book three of the wayfarer redemption) - Sara Douglas. I fell in love with Sara Douglas's books after reading the crucible trilogy. This is nowhere near as good as the crucible, but still a damn good read and a very different style to the crucible. I'd love to run a LRP based on the ideas in the crucible trilogy, but it would just offend so many people..... still tempting though...

The Golden Bough is a superb read. Are you ploughing through the full 10 volume edition, or one of the modern abridged versions?

| Judas Unchained by Peter F Hamilton Peter F Hamilton attempts to do a space opera with hard science ideas added to it. The book's references to enzyme bonded concrete supposedly saved Dave Langford's life during the July 7th Bombings because the book is so large he couldn't be arsed to carry the hardback with him on the tube to the office and so decided to stay at home and read/review it there. I especially like the concept of using trains to travel through interstellar warp gates. Its the sort of bizarre idea which appeals to me - getting an intercity 125 to another planet

Frazer's 1922 abridged version printed by wordsworth editions Ltd which I picked up in a second hand book shop for the princely sum of £1.50

Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson
Started it because I love some of his cyberpunk stuff. Very different in style, but I'm enjoying it so far. It's well researched with a wealth of historical detail providing an interesting (and for the historically illiterate like me, educational) background to the fictional story.
