The absence of body language and inflection that you normally get when talking to people IRL is a contributory factor to forum tetchiness.

There is a tendency for a lot of people to be more bullish when posting and whilst I haven't done any research to back this up, I suspect that there may be manifestations of the sort of territoriality more usually apparent as 'road rage' going on.

The simple fact is that forums promote conflict, (now there's a statement that may well promote conflict...) anything you write is in the public domain and is representative of you. When someone disagrees (sometimes vehemently), the way your brain processes this uses processes, the instinctive 'fight or flight' assessment, to assess risk and options. As risk is low, whether we like it or not, (literary) fight becomes a viable option resulting in a protraction and potential escalation of any disagreement.

Impersonality... because you're looking at a screen, rather than a person, it's easier to become detached from how your comments will impact other board members. This dehumanisation can divorce us from the fact that the rest of the forum are people making it easier for posters to be harsher.

Note to self: must try harder to be less of a git.

I completly agree ... the problem with any typed message, be it email, txt, msn etc..etc.. is the lack of body language, so do people think a clearer set of guidelines would help ??

We all know (I'd hope) what's polite and what's not, and I wonder if clearer (enforced) rules of posting were stuck to would help ?? or if clear warnings would work or would they just squash peoples freedom of speech ??

I also wonder people take on swearing ?? is it realy needed to express ?? or is that getting just far too anal ??  some people feel bad language gives the impression of agression ??

There are clear rules, they are enforced.

The issue is with folk who interpret the rules so the only apply to them or who are so desperate that they bend the rules so that they apparently cover what someone else said.

Fortunately the mods here do not appear to have their own heads up their own arses.

Anyone coming on the forum can look at those rules. If the don't like them the can f*ck off. Simple really. They certainly shouldnt start trying to have the rules changed to suit them.

Wow, you seem to have perfectly summed up to me the kind of reply that would put me off..... unless your joking that is, and I missed the wit....

So basically you feel it's fair and encouraging to play rough as long as you think there is no chance I wont come and pound you to mush ??

I think what Flannel was trying to say is exactly the kind of thing that gets my agressive peaks up. If you need clearly defined rules that state every single possbile outcome and courses of action for each then you probably don't get it and thus shouldn't post. Btw, "you" there was a total generalisation and not aimed at anyone. What ever happened to common sense? The only rule I (normally) go by is that there are possibly thousands of people that will read this and there are measures available on the internet that if I really upset someone they could probably find out where I live. Paranoid? Yes, but then if we all go by the same guidelines then the chances of us pissing each other off are greatly reduced, ergo a more pleasant internet experiece all round.

Also, I give trolls and flamers 3 chances (posts) before I give as good as I get, just in case I read it wrong. Normally I also go and make a cup of tea before letting rip, just so I've had a chance to calm down.

Regarding forums, this little line keeps me sane:

I want everyone to start posting only in E-Prime, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. We have a good set of rules on here, even if (as Flannel says) people seem to try to apply them quite... creatively... when making complaints to the admins. Luckily said admins are thoroughly impartial, which is IMO one of the reasons for this place's success.

I also wonder people take on swearing ?? is it realy needed to express ?? or is that getting just far too anal ?? some people feel bad languagegives the impression of agression??

Nah, fuck that.

Now the weird thing with LRP forums and folks trolling and or being downright insulting is that unlike other forums ones concerning LRP do have the chance that you will meet your 'adversary'. It has happened in the past that I've met well known LRP board 'agitators' and been pleasantly amused by their complete lack of enthusiasm at the prospect of continuing the lively banter face to face. I must point out that at no point was I threatening (honest), it's just damn funny that folks will rattle off on one without realising someone might say 'oy, that time you called me XXXX. Lets chat about it', at an event.

Anyways I’ve got used to it now and I don’t get wound up…..in fact I probably wind a lot of folks up.
