Is the Gathering really the best example of UK LRP?

Still the largest, though, which appears to be the criteria for that list.

Maelstrom: Jessily the Wemic, previously Tourmaline of Weaver
CUTT: Kerriville the Ninth, previously Ref 07/08

I've just yahoo searched for Dagorhir and found a website for them. They're a US group who have indeed been doing what looks just like LRP since 1977, though they didn't start getting organised until 81, they definitely predate Treasuretrap.

The main difference seems to be an emphasis on combat,(their early events being promoted as "hobbit battles") rather than roleplay/plot.

You could argue the main emphasis of Treasuretrap was combat not plot/roleplay...

It'd be neat if the UK games also included:

Renewal - 1,000

Maelstrom - 1,000

(Or whatever numbers are actually right...)

I believe Royd Tolkien talked about a regular bunch of costume enthusiasts who would gather near the family home (I think it was when J. R. R. moved to Bournemouth) during the Summer when he was a boy. Royd Tolkien was born in 1969. It is possible this could pre date some of the benchmarks here.

However I'll need to substantiate this.

No, it was Wales.

Here, this might be of use.

Of course though, like Gygax's claims its little more than an anecdote of let's pretend rather than an LRP game.

One of the comments at the bottom regarding these 'enactments' made me laugh:

At Last! It's been too long, I would love to meet up with the guys again, and re-enact the massive battle scene from the second film. We used some of the animals on the farm as orcs last time, and it's fair to say we wiped the floor with them. Good barbeque afterwards as well!

You could argue that (and you'd probably be right) what Immeant was-the Dagorhir website seems to be very "battle" focussed, whereas TT was about solving a plot (admittedly through the application of violence). Personally (even though it goes against the grain) I'd have to admit that the yanks did it first, sorry Alan but I don't think dressing up as a hobbit and hanging around JRR Tolkiens house counts as LRP (esp not in 1969- they all dressed like bloody hobbits).

if we want to subsrtantiate the US claims that running a battle reanctment with a non-historical theme counts as LRP then we need to go into all of the interactive and experimental theatre which occured pre dating that which equally counts as LRP if you want to be loose.

Hell lets push it out and say that actually fancy dress parties devolve into LRP quite often.

So yup until someone defines LRP the nyou have no basis for claiming anything as the 'first'

I think that LRP is a term born of self-definition.  Things in the past that might look a bit like LRP now aren't LRP, cos they didn't think they were doing any Live Role Playing.  That keeps experimental theatre and freeformery in their own separate boxes, and recognises that LRP is whatever the hell we say it is, at the time we say it (caveat: rule 7 applies).
