(Posted on behalf of a new user having problems with using the forum. )
Hello everybody,
I’m currently making a documentary (in French, so sorry for my English) about Bicolline (http://www.bicolline.org). For a teaser (French) of the film see http://www.bico.tv . An aspect of the film will track LARP’s evolution since its debut (wargames/roleplay/fantasy) that will be completed by LARP situation in the world. That type of info is not gathered and that is why I’m asking if any of you could help answering :
LARP EVENTS IN THE WORLD :
- Gathering.UK 4 000 (2007);
- Bicolline.QC 1 800 (2007);
- Anachrone.FR 1 000 (2007);
- Avatar.BE 1 100 (2007);
- Ragnarok XXII.US 1 200 (2007);
- Drachenfest.GE ?
- ?
1st LARP FOR THESE COUNTRIES (precise sources please) :
- USA 1977 ;
- England 1981 ;
- France 1982 ;
- Australia 1983 ;
- Belgium 1985
- Canada ?
- Spain ?
- Scandinavia ?
- Poland ?
- Germany ?
- Russia ?
- Others ?
Anyone know any of these languages and is willing to search LARP forums for these?
Also, is LARP exclusive to Western (including Australia) 'white' cultures?
Thanks for sharing this post,
Regards,
Patrick Rene

| Nero claimed in 2006 that US larp started in 1984 by Ford Ivy. No idea if that is actually true or not. Gary (RIP) once claimed on film to have invented larp a long time before that. UK larp did start in 1981 with Treasure trap Danish larp started in 1983. One of the co-founders was a Treasure Trap player. If you need more information, I suggest the article (which I wrote) published in this book: http://forums.rule7.co.uk/Topic56073-76-1.aspx#bm65505

I think you'll find larp started a million years ago when kids played in woods with sticks and has evolved ever since! Me and my mates played in our back gardens with bamboo broad swords and curtain capes long before we ever heard of larp! lol infact we still do No one started it, it just evolved! Such a claim would be a treasonable offence to cave man Bob!!!!

| "USA 1977 " Ha ha ha.... Im not even going to start here. You have no chance, most of the people who supplied you with info are self interested or liars opr confused. Youll get so much confusing info its not even worth it and as a result anything you produce will be innaccurate.

I know in the run up to Dragonbane I ended up talking to people in russia and in Israel. I have no idea how to contact them now. Maybe if you tried to contact the organisers of Dragonbane they'd be able to pass this on to people from many countries.

| You'd need to come up with an agreed definition of what it is (and as you can't even show the courtesy of using the name it was originally given i.e Live Role Play-LRP) you've got no chance. As Gunman says children have used role play to work out social behaviours since the stone age (if not earlier)- however the first formalised system was probably Treasure Trap at Peckforton('81).

Flannel (7/7/2008) "USA 1977 "
Ha ha ha....
I dunno - that sounds like Dagohir, which is as much LRP as the Gathering was when it first started. You could argue about definitions all day, but Dagohir has a pretty good claim to be the first organised "kids back-yard make-believe".

H (7/7/2008) Dagohir has a pretty good claim to be the first organised "kids back-yard make-believe".
The Society of Creative Anachronism (1966) would also be a contender.

| The SCA have always been very clear that they are not LRP, they are more like a fantasy reenactment society.
