Cheers for the advice. I think just venting spleen let me feel a bit more optimistic about what I can achieve. I'd hoped to be able to switch to a more location-based (rather than linear narrated-journeys) style, but I've been persuaded that the area we've got to play in makes that unfeasible. I'm just worried that there's a big conflict between having a multi-sided plot and the limitations of linear style and scale.

I've got at least two reliable hench-persons to help- in game, I'm planning to have one controlling NPCs and one to help marshall players. Probably more. There are some very good people involved, I must say. There's just also some not so good ones, in a "here-to-hit things and not talk about it" way.

Anyone got suggestions for one-shot friendly, modern street-casual LARP? I've just started wondering whether some kind of modern-fantasy (whether at the Dresden Files or Unknown Armies end of the spectrum, I don't know) might be a nice stepping stone into something else, because a lot of the society are Call of Cthulhu phobic. Can't think why...

Cancel the Unknown Armies idea. Having to explain the Cult of the Naked Woman to a bunch of ingenues would be too, too much.

As you're uni-based check out the rules for being a Student Union affiliated society. Most SU's have a budget for affiliated societies, and if you put together a decent budget proposal then you should be able to get a grant to cover basic monster kit, weapons and masks. They may also have a minibus which you might be able to hire to take the members to events further afield.

If you're planning to run regular adventures, then don't fall in to the trap of putting all your best ideas into the first adventure of the season. Adventures don't have to be perfect, and many of the best-remembered events will be stuff that happened spontaneously rather than planned.

You've already had an offer of help from someone who lives in the Nottingham area. I'm sure there are plenty of other non-uni LRPers nearby who'd be interested in coming along. As well as bulking out the numbers, they may also have useful experience from other systems to share.

I've gotten the impression this usually hangs on getting X student members signed up/some minimum membership paid (i.e. make sure that last year's members have _all_ signed up and get meet the requisite minimum via recruitment - if other small societies are having difficulties making quota, make a deal to try to share members if possible).

At Durham, the student's union offered a no cost 'running around in fields' insurance cover (I think you just had to say "we'd like to be covered under the same insurance the sports societies have please") - it wasn't great, but the alternate Adventurer's Guild insurance wasn't really designed for people holding event once or twice a week.

Hi GenericUnique
Sorry if I sounded a bit abrupt before I was getting ready to leave at the end of the working day and I thought eyup that sounds familiar. Yeah the uni site is quite a nice one woods paths and isn't there a cave bit? Yep I used to work on campus, many years ago, ferrying books about and saw the LRPers hanging about on occasion. It's good that you're reaching out here some Uni clubs (not all) can be a bit insular, see if you can tempt some old blood along from the Nottingham area. My suggestions are. Make some basic kit for the new folks that turn up in jeans and trainers. Use as much of the Uni's facilities as possible. Don't they have lovely olde worldy conference rooms packed away in there somewhere? Does the mountain climbing lot have a hut somewhere that you can use out in the wilds? Is there a uni minibus you can use to take big groups to events. Organise a pub night that folks from the uni and non uni can come to chat about stuff. Mr Danial is just down the road and I could pop into town, plus I dare say I could hassle up a few folks from Nottingham for a few pints!
Maybe look up FnH, I seem to remember that they are looking for a site to run at around Nottingham. Could you team up? You have site they have kit. A marriage made in heaven?
Anyway feel free to PM me if you want. I may even turn up for a knock about in the woods if you'll have me?
