Here's my vamp larp... it'd be called Teutoberg Wald.

The setting would be Varus' ill fated campaign against Armenius, post battle of Teutoberg.

Location would be outdoors in a forest, preferably in winter although softie larpers might not go for this.

Time in will run from 1 hour before sunset to 2 hours after sunrise or 24 hr; either would do, although be specifying time in as 'when it's dark' means that players will know they're gonna be up all night and might prepare properly.

Promote it as this, no mention of vamps. Lead the players to believe their adversaries (both Roman and German) are the monster crew. Romans and Germans* are players, at war with each other. NPCs are vamps. A couple of the Germans are NPC/vampires.

A supply of stab safe wooden stakes would be available to the players at some point.

Call time in, the Roman remnants are trying to get back to the Empire with a hostage (random relative of Armenius, also a vampire). Germans are trying to rescue hostage, unaware he is a vampire (except for the NPC vampires in the group). Vampires want to kill the vampire hostage (he's from another clan/group/whatever). Stand back, enjoy the carnage.

To keep things on track, the centurion/leader of the Romans might have to be an NPC.

That's the basic outline.

I think if I ran a vampire larp, it'd have to be a SURPRISE!VAMPIRE as well. But the problem is getting people interested without telling them the surprise...

People tempted by something advertised as a historical larp probably wouldn't be very keen on suddenly having vampires thrown at them. And people who would be keen on vampires wouldn't hear about the larp, as it's a surprise.

Bit of a difficult one, really.

You should ask Kessboy about drumming up interest in games and then hitting people with a surprise.  He recently conned people into thinking they were playing an entirely social "rom com" LRP and then attacked us with terrorists half way through.  Only one of the players knew it was coming.  Evryone loved it AFAIK.

No, it's not a silly idea.....it's potentially an awesome idea. You've admitted to having the expertise and knowledge now you HAVE to see it through....errrr......thats rule 8!

One of the guys at work just suggested we combine that (or just IR LEDs on the monster crew) with Seam Carving to remove the vampires entirely...

Matt -- the problem is that anyone playing one of kessboy's games either expects to be surprised in some crazy manner or deserves everything that happens to them ;-)

Lost Love's Labours is the game in question.
