Something that is striking to me is most of you are coming up with 'vampire hunter larp' rather than the traditional 'be the vampire' WW format.

In constrast to this, there are relatively few larps in the uk currently where players are supernatual investigators of any type (cthulhu mythos or otherwise).

I disagree that there are relatively few LARPs of this type in the UK.  I can think of at least 5 off the top of my head and know there to be more out there.  Granted, a couple of those games are invite only though.

Can you tell us about the 3 which are not invite only then?

Possibly cos vampires are shitty protagonists that only appeal to angsty goth types?

Nah, I'm kidding. I think it's because nearly all of us have played V:TM in one form or another at some point, whereas as you mention there's not really many vampire hunter type games around. Twilight is about the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

There just seems so much more game to be had in "Argh it's just me and my friends against the supernatural powers of the night! ARGH!" than in actually playing as vampires, and the evidence so far would seem to suggest others agree. That said there may be a natural bias in the Rule7 membership, I dunno.

To be fair I agree with Chalicier.  I think that there may be a general consensus (on rule 7 at least) that quite a few people enjoy playing the "hunter" rather than the "vampire".....even if that makes you the underdog.  I really enjoy playing as the underdog at times, rather than the all powerful uberdemon of win.  I've played and crewed quite a few occult/supernatural/paranormal investigation games and really enjoy it.  I love playing the underdog and having to Benny Hill it away from the big bad from time to time (although I'm not the fastest runner in Chrissendom).  It's possible why I adore the film the lost boys, it's just genious that the heroes are just a few kids who decide to take on the vamp pack.  I love the scene where they run into church and steal holy water out of the font...pure awesome.

I think if I were to write something on the vamp format I'd be tempted to have a sci-fi/post-modern game with the vamps as the underdogs.  Have something where poeple are regularly spot-checked for the taint of vampirism and give the human population decent weapons to fight vamps with....making it a bit of a vamp survivalist game and thus making the vamps physically and supernaturally superior but still the underdog.

In reply to Nath I know Darkdoor have done 1930's Cthulu unvestigator type LARP, the Project used to run which was modern day invite only, I used to crew Twilight (not the one mentioned by Chalicier...a different one) which was modern day paranormal/supernatural investigators which has not run for a few years but may (or may not) be making a comeback, Darktimes which is a medievil supernatural investigation game mixed with horror run by Trez....and I know there are more but don't want to go on.

Ultraviolet, then. "Carbon bullet" lasertag with some kind of clever software to remove vampire players from camera pictures? The latter seems unlikely but I had a few wild ideas just thinking about it.

To be fair I'd be way up for an "Ultraviolet" LARP. I loved the series....it would be a great setting. Lasertag could do it although removing the vamps from the pics might be a little bit difficult. Although I'm no science expert.

I think the modern/post modern just isn't what I want to do at the moment, I see all the Sci Fi and post apocalypse games and they just don't get me excited, which is odd 'cos I usually love that stuff.
I can't even get enthusiastic about something as "modern" as Maelstrom and I used to love running stuff in that genre.
Maybe it's to near to reality.

Well, I did quite a lot of work with outline recognition in Uni, I might dig out my old notes and have a play. You'd need to tag the Vamps in some way to mark them as things you need to play with. Then load up a EEE PC with the appropriate software, add on a webcam, and strap it onto your guns...

Nah, it's a silly idea, it just seemed amusing.
