Suppose you had to organise/play 'a vampire larp,' but could define all the other parameters of it. What would it be like?

- setting. NWod, OWoD, Anne Rice, Stoker, historical myth or something else? Would you set it in a particular timeframe or move it through the ages as the game progresses?

- ruleset. one of the published systems, rip off a mainstream boffer system, or something else? How would you handle vampiric powers (if you would have them?)

- format. 24/7 game with monthly session (like the cam) or ocassional weekend events? perversive gaming in real cities keeping the masquerade for real? something else?

- themes. What sort of thematic elments would you want to explore? Would you include the sort of 'adult' material WW do?

I'd do an annual weekend-long event in December.  This year, it'd be 19th Dec to 21st Dec.  I'd run it at Fort Widley or Fort Purbrook, black out all the windows, and not let people outside during the day.  That way, it'd be in the dark for the whole event.  I'd make the PCs into a mob of vampire hunters, with some of them as secret vampiric pawns.  The themes would be greed, betrayal and horror (natch).  Setting would be semi-original, trying to draw away from WW stuff.  Ruleset would be custom, with minor supernatural stuff for some PCs and much more for vampire types.

Lasertag, based on "Ultraviolet". The Code V's would have sensors on their front and back over their hearts.

PD - Brother Farael of the Ordo Dictum Dominus
EOS - Some Raggard Scum, previously Some Arimin Scum
6P - System creator (now retired), Andrei Treune of Clan Suner (for the moment)
RL - Will Robinson

Present day - based upon "Anita Blake" series by Laurel K Hamilton were vamps et al are legal and presentable to the public but get up to all kinds of unsavoury things when no one is watchin.
extra powers available for ilimination of enemies, forming alliences and blood donation! Vamps are not allowed out in the sunlight, and must stick to the shadows. Human servants are affected by damage done to their vamp and vise versa.
Would be larp every 3rd month with plot set up to include problems which can only be solved when conflicting groups merge information? A castle/abby setting would be ace

Newstead abby would be ace!! All that garden but I doubt VERY much they would let a bunch uncouth larpers lose in the rooms were Byron once slept!!!
Abandonded church would be good but Iv herd the ground needs to be de consecrated before they let anything like this happen.
I suppose woods would be just as scary with the right props

I personally like the idea of current or near future vampire. It makes it easier to attribute current affairs to them.

Alternatively anything set in the 'dark ages' can help a lot as there are no complications regarding modern technology and there is always enough superstition that could lead the 'party' astray.

There are many sites up and down the country, from churches to hospitals, that are either for sale or can be rented that would make excellent settings for many types of LRP. It just takes a little hutspa to approach the site owners and persuade them to let you hire the venue for a weekend.

Just to try and actually answer the above questions (i love tabs to keep the original thread onscreen so I can keep on track!)

If you have a party of 'hunters' it makes life sooo much easier. Something that resembles 'Clive Barkers' Vampires' can be transferred to any timeframe quite nicely.

Setting: If you are going for a pre-modern system it makes life very much easier as faith plays a vital part. The party could be Vatican approved and can have religious symbols to prove their faith. Also this can help as a small village can be plagued by disappearances and strange noises from the church grounds since the last priest vanished. There are others but this IS theoretical, right?

Rules: I love locational hits systems (may have something to do with the first system I ever played) and that way as people get injured IC then there would be a greater chance that the vamps can 'smell' where the PC's are. One idea I've had (and apologies if it's been done before) is where everyone has a 'spirit' rating (let's say humans start with 5 spirit average). As hits are taken, the spirit level drops and the human becomes more vulnerable to vamp powers. This way you can realistically throw waves of ghouls at the party so that the vamps can just mop up later.

Format: In my opinion, not running a 24 hour vampire setting is copping out a bit. Why would the vamps stop the attacks when there's several hours of darkness left? Having say 3-4 events a year with a kind of DT where the PC's can 'just get on with the job' and only really have to play their characters for the 'important' jobs works for me. That doesn't mean that you can't run more events with other PC's that are also working in tandem so that occasionally you can run simultaneous parties.

Themes: One of the best props I've ever seen was when a friend created a mutilated corpse on the path on one of our adventures. There was sooo much blood and he even phys repped a leg torn off. It shat us up in a way that only horror films do. Let's face it, sometimes any system can go just that bit too far but if you are running 'adult' themed events then so long as any violence/gore/nudity is actually done in the spirit of the game rather than gratuity then it should be done not overdone!

Powers: Not necessarily in it's own category but I think it would be nice to include. White Wolfs 'alacrity' is one of the detritus's of the LRP world, 'hang on for five minutes while we go around and play 'paper, scissors, rock' with everyone else and then you get your 10 seconds'. Time freezes should only EVER be used sparingly in ANY system and any system that relies upon them as a rule should be burned and the ashes pissed upon by rabid dogs! There are LOTS of subtle ways in which 'powers' of mind control etc. can be used where the NPC's don't have to resolve shouting 'Enthrall 4!' at the players. Gesturing with one hand while the other holds the appropriate number of fingers on the 'casters' chest can be used and keep the atmosphere going. 'Mist form' lets face it can be represented with fingers in the air while the vamp walks around can be made more fun when the ref's have a smoke machine providing a 'background fog'. Strength can be represented with damage calls and/or some creative semi-contact wrestling (I once played White Wolf live vamp and one of the best 'crowd pleasing' moments was when I 'threw' another PC across a table. It took minimal effort for me as the other guy leaped backwards, crashed across the table and then landed in a heap the other side. The look of shock on everyone else's face was priceless!). If the powers of vamps are restricted to minor mental abilities (except for the end-of-level-baddy) then you don't need special calls etc. A ref could just walk around occasionally whispering things in peoples ears and letting them deal with the IC situation. Having a party member 'turn' can also be fun as there comes the dilemma where they want to help their friends, but the hunger can start to take over.

I had a little think about this. First idea involved alien vampires harvesting the earth and the PC Vamps having to join forces with vamp hunters to defeat the alien vamp menace. The whole thing spanning time into the far future with an apocalypse at the end of earths history! But then I remembered the pilot TV episode called ‘Being Human’, which I hope they extend into a full series. So:

 ‘Being Human’

- setting. A flat/house and maybe a few not so public locations around town, maybe a deserted hospital for various ‘scenes’.

- ruleset. A system based around character interaction, with set goal/aims cards, Players use persuasion skills that ‘brow beat’ others characters into doing what they want. Skills can add to this, with the ‘brow beating banter’ being based on a top trumps word games idea (I haven’t bothered to work this out but it’s a seed of an idea I’ve been mulling over).

- format. A weekend event with scenes set over the weekend that can last a few hours each.

- themes. The whole thing would be a kind of dark comedy, I’m not funny enough to come up with great material but I’m sure there are many witty and clever players out there that could have a field day with this.
