Someone on the Insurrection boards asked whether we allowed arm-mounted crossbows. It wasn't something we'd considered, to be honest, and so I thought I'd ask here what the issues with them might be, and why we might (or might not) want to allow them.
Cheers,
Joe

My only issue with them is that they look a bit naff.

I agree with Sarah. Unless you're running a Mad Max game, they just look silly.

I had a friend who used them regularly and borrowed them myself a few times in a system that we played for many years without encountering problems.
However I will qualify that by saying that although it was combat heavy system grappling was very rare and we were all experienced LRPers who didn't mind a few bruises. They can be a little clunky and awkward and the crossbow arms can occasionally catch weapons during a fight (although I'm not aware of any weapon damage caused as a result) and if you go in close or grapple the protruding arms can give you a bit of a knock. All of the arm crossbows I've seen have arms that are chunky and curved at the ends so there is no danger of cuts or anything like that and personally I think there no more dangerous than hard armour or elbows when grappling.

I agree with Sarah. Unless you're running a Mad Max game, they just look silly. Agreed. They are safe as anything else is when a large hard object is strapped to your arm and you're not used to it being there... so depends on the person. I, for example, am a bimbling fool and would no doubt strip latex from weapons and remove peoples' teeth if allowed one, but that's me.

Nath (6/30/2008) As an aside, does anyone know when arm mounted crossbows were invented / used in the real world?they werent.. its a purley fantasy invention. the 2 key advantages of a crossbopw are that you can put more energy into it by using a foot styrrup or windlass.. this just isnt possible if you strap it to your arm.. the other advantage of a crossbow is that you dont expose yorself to enemy fiire when hiding behind a battlement (again not an advantage of arm mounting) I'm just waiting for th inevitable flood of posters who will tell me that the Japanese Ninjas invented them in 3 thousand BC and used them to kill teenage mutant ninja elephants

AFAIK, never. There's no point - like that person before me said: an armbow implies a one-handed draw, which means a toylike poundage, which means negligible damage. It's the same old difference again - LARP you fight to hit, real life you fight to hurt.
I think I saw one in a dreadful fantasy comic once, and I've seen one in anime.
