| How offensive is the term Ballgowner? Now personally, I've heard it used to describe two different sets of behaviour: 1) Someone who really goes to LRP to dress up in clothes they would not normally have an excuse to wear. It is implied that the roleplay aspect is of minimal interest to them, and they actively avoid any activity that would damage their very fine costume. 2) Someone who goes to great lengths to avoid physical conflict and is heavily into politicking. Of course, the two cross-over. Someone who is very into the fine details of ficitional treaties and politics is likely to have a strong attention to detail, and thus spend a lot of time/money/effort on very nice clothes.

I've never heard that phrase - the closest I've heard is 'tea-drinker', which is more about ii) than i).

Ah, a compliment. Excellent. ;-)
I've never heard of 'ballgowners'. But I'd rather have someone who's just there for the dressing up than someone who's there to get pissed and hit things. Why yes, I am a costume nazi.

Indeed. At least people who are predominantly there to dress up are unlikely to spoil anyone else's sense of immersion by showing up in jeans & trainers.

| I have been called a ballgowner in that past. To be fair it was accurate then, meant jokingly and I'm still not sorry. I found it as about as offensive as being called a thumpit monkey these days. To whit not at all. I'm not that precious and if anyone means it as an insult instead of as a generally light hearted summation I reckon they are probably sulking about something anyway.

I second that way of thinking.
