I think it would depend how LT ended. A sudden stop (for whatever reason) would increase the chance of someone new stepping in with a replacement while a long, slow collapse would more likely see people going to other systems (or simply quit).

Not knowing either that well, I'm not sure how CP and Maelstrom (the two obvious alternatives) would cope with a sudden influx of a large number of players, trying to bring in existing groups and characters while have developed under LT (as I suspect many would try to do). After all, I think part of the problem LT suffered was that it got to big and disconnected.

I bet the second-hand kit market would be flooded though

You can't bring a character across to Maelstrom it makes no sense because the world is so different. I think it would be easier with CP because of the shared history going way back, but could be wrong.

Hmmmmm, I guess it's just me, but when I read "what if the LT died" the holy grail quote

"and there was much rejoicing" popped into my head..

I'd be crying into my beer (if I drank) if the LT fell over. That possibly seems strange since they're our biggest commercial rival. Sure we'd get a short term hit with some players coming over, maybe gain a few hundred players or so which would be great, but then what?

Today I view the Gathering as the most fantastic marketing opportunity of the year. Andy King and the LT arrange for 2000 LRPers to come together in a field for a weekend and then he lets 500 of my players go along and tell them how brilliant Maelstrom is and how they should come. It's a situation entirely made of win. Possibly our numbers always spike up by 100 after every Gathering because it's the end of the year, but I think it's got a lot more to do with people using the LT to recruit players to our game. There is no doubt in my mind that the existence of the Gathering has been a major factor in our ability to grow constantly year on year. I don't have to worry about advertising, the LT (and CP) covers all my needs and it doesn't cost me a penny. Massive, extensive, free advertising, using highly effective viral marketing to an audience guaranteed to be interested in my product. For free. How good is that?

I advertise other LRP events free in our mailshots. Why? Because I want Maelstrom players to go along and tell everyone how great Maelstrom is... Word of mouth is what sells the hobby. More people going to more events is in my interests, even if they're not my events they are going to. A large well supported hobby with big events attended by hundreds makes it much easier for smaller events to promote themselves. By coming together to play, we create the social networks that allow other events to be promoted, but that only works if the events are there to go to.

It's easy to think that if it all fell over then someone else would just come along and do it instead. I have to tell you that running a large LRP event is hard work. Setting one up from scratch is more hard work. It's not easy and I think it's naive to think that Son of Gathering would be along the next day to make it all better. It's much more likely that a dozen replacements would spring up, all of them small and fragmented (we'd make a play for the August Bank Holiday if LT folded) and competing. Traders would be drawn between much smaller events, reducing their markets and sales and making their life harder. The really big opportunity for advertising your game to thousands of British LRPers would be gone, possibly for a few years, possibly for good and in the end the hobby as a whole would suffer because the extent of our social networks would be reduced.

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

If Maelstrom didn't get in there quick then I'd cry if Eos didn't get it (hint hint)

I know, but that wouldn't stop people trying, which is where the problems might come up.

There are afew Maelstrom backgrounds that suit a more traditional fantasy setting. Merisusi spring to mind as the obvious ones but does limit what races are available somewhat. I do agree that importing characters en masse will fall on its head, but importing bits and pieces wouldn't be a problem.

Though I question the motives of players and groups that want to play the same thing every single event.
