Since the forum is in a state of self-examination about LRP I wanted to pose the question. What if the LT died.

So hypothetically the LT issues a statement that this is their last year. Not enough players or *insert reason here* has meant they can't continue.

How would that affect the LRP hobby. Is the LT as the biggest fest system at the heart of the hobby. And the others are just niche that wouldn't attract the 'general' player.

Or would people migrate to other systems.

Or would another fest system be quickly put in its place.

Or would smaller games be started to suit people varied tastes.

If the core of LT died there would be a period of confusion I'm sure but there's always someone with the vision /energy/willpower/time on there hands to start something up so I would hope for a period where several groups of old LT lags run games in different parts of the country with slightly differing themes.
The interesting thing if this were indeed the case would be, would these systems start to merge to form a larger whole once more or would they become more distinct and go their own way, gaining a unique character of their own.
I think this dispersal would be an interesting time for the hobby as people would be put in a position where by they suddenly have a chance to enact their own ideas and get involved, rather than just turning up to the same old system time and again.
The lazier players would soon return after the new groups solidified, in truth it wouldn't just die and go away someone would step in and take up the reins.
If people want to LRP, they will find a way to do it.

I imagine you'd have alot of players get out of the hobby, but alot more find other games. I'd expect to see a heavy influx of players going to CP and Maelstrom. From speaking to them, I think a decent minority of players at the big fests don't play any other games and don't necessarily have established friend groups who do or would, and I can't help but think alot of them would lose connection to the hobby.

But I'd say its more likely the LT would shrink massively long before it died.

I have to agree that the LT would just limp along and not give up. It is still the biggest event so I guess it can take the losses.

I was told that Andy King is no longer running the LT day to day. That since rules v3 the organization has become formalized. They have a database to handle characters etc. How much of a difference has this made.

While I prefer smaller games. I can see how allot of people would prefer to go to a fest event. Where plot etc come from the top. Hordes of monsters attack and the kids have things to do as well.

I would see the family aspect the biggest hindrance to people going to other events. So CP might see an influx of refugees.

So would the LRP scene be 'better' (your interpretation of the word) if the LT stopped and a new group of people came together to start a new fest.

This is purely based on hearsay since I haven't been to LT. Arguing with me on the subject of whether the LT is good or not is therefore not necessary.

But yes I think it would be better overall, though I'm biased because I don't like that kind of LRP. We wouldn't need a new fest, because CP could just get bigger, and absorb them - and the impression i get is that CP is what the LT would be like if it was better, so hopefully that would be fine.

The only drawback would be long term LT-ers that don't have the motivation to try out something else and would therefore drop from the hobby. Hopefully the ones that miss it enough would be motivated to find something else though. I've just noticed that there are a lot of single system LRPers out there who don't seem to have even considered trying something different.

I think one very positive aspect would be that the board wouldn't be routinely taken over by people arguing over whether the LT is rubbish or not .

It'd be four less dates to avoid scheduling events on.
