These impressions might be wrong and might mean nothing at all, but there they are.

I'd suggest that your impressions don't match up with a lot of other people's, and I can also name at least 20 women I've met at fests who'd take serious issue with your description of them there. The Healer-Girlfriend and the Matriarch-Queen may be the stereotypes, but that doesn't mean they're even close to a majority at most events.

(Sorry if this sounds a little aggressive, but I've just come back from an event where every single stereotype you mentioned there was blown out of the water so hard I'd be surprised if any bits came back down again.)

They don't match up with mine, but I'm aware of why this might be. I've played in three systems: one (CUTT) is a university club LARP with about relatively even gender balance, and a playerbase whose list of what they want out of LARP is also fairly varied, but most people are enthusiastic both about verbal interaction IC and hitting stuff IC.

In the other two (Maelstrom, EOS), the groups I'm a member of are made up of people who're also from said university club LARP, and thus turn out to be relatively evenly-balanced for gender and also for hitty and talky.

As for the Venin group at last EOS, I think the gender balance both in the starting group (of 21) and the survivors (7) was about even, though it may be worth noting that most of the venin who survived and didn't gen new characters, but instead used diplomancy to join with another group, were mostly female.

Ultimately, though, we played venin because we wanted to stab people up.

Maelstrom: Potch, sun facet.
CUTT: Ref 2008/09 (formerly a half-demon, a soldier and an elf).
EOS: Lady Jessamine Olivia Arundel, Sorasian Nation (formerly Choke the Venin, made a tasty snack).

Besides if we want to boast about how unusual our LRP is, I think we have a long way to go to catch up with those crazy Scandowedians.

"Black Out" was held in Helsinki, February 26th 2000, at Solmukohta - the 4th annual Nordic LARP festival and lasted aprox. 3 hours. The room was pitch black. The characters were fragments of the memories of a woman who had suffered amnesia. The concept was unique. The event is generally considered a success, but suffered somewhat from inadequate safety measures.

This sounds unusual, but I don't think it'd work with over 2000 people

Clearly there's a limit to how unusual a fest larp can be!

Logic is a white, male, bourgeois, European construct historically used to denigrate and belittle the Other. Naturally, if we are going to embrace the equality imperative we must accept intellectual plurality as more than a token gesture, we must accept the equal relevance of *feeling* and disallow reactionary attempts to censor through the invocation of "consistency". An excess of veracity can be counterproductive to the acceptance of transformative social goals - technical inaccuracies may be serving spiritual truths.

Why do you post these things, again?

I've got a feeling Mr P might be right. Is bigger better?

How about spending 6 months IC on a Hebridean Island as shipwrecked Vikings? Now that's a challenge I'd like to see UK LRP moving in the direction of!

To register his concern over the hegemoniacal acceptance of the patriarchy. Or is that the patriarchal acceptance of hegemony?

(Just be glad he didn't put "hermeneutics" in there somewhere...)

I'd rather you didn't wave your hermeneutics around in the thread, particularly as there might be ladies present!

Wow... so many long words... which is part of what i think the problem is in the UK.

To much pontification, not enough roleplay or for that matter keeping with the subject and looking for a solution (if people actaully want to find one)

I'm with Shelford on this one...

Shelford (5/20/2008) How about spending 6 months IC on a Hebridean Island as shipwrecked Vikings? Now that's a challenge I'd like to see UK LRP moving in the direction of!

After speaking to a lots of customers & players I get the distinct impression the UK camp seems to be split into 2 groups, the "get pissed and hit things" camp and the "Roleplay, then maybe hit things... then get a bit less pissed" camp.

I think the roleplay is missing big time at big events in the UK.. and every time I go to one (which is getting less) it gets worse, so I go less..... admit it or not our brothers and sisters overseas, seem to like to roleplay far more.

As I have said before, LRPstore made an open invitation years ago, to try and help back something special.... whether it was a simple dislike of LRPstore (or their sucess) or some other reason, we got 3 people interested !!!! despite the fact we said the focus would be on putton on a fantastic event, rather than focusing on traders.

I don't buy that personally. I don't think there are fundamental limits to how unusual fest lrp can be. However generally, if you're running a fest you're aiming for big numbers and that means "mainstream". Something the dogma99 boys aren't very keen on. To put it bluntly.

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.
