Roll on cheap credit card size, iphone style PDAs that can scan RFID tags I say. Stick one of them in a small note book, wave book at a tagged object and jobs a good 'un.

A voice was heard to say, “Who dares disturb the crypt of the Immortal Space Bitches?”
“I am Grimm Shado,” said Grimm Shado, triple wand claws extending. “And I am here to take it to the limit.”

I can't help feeling that this would *still* break my sense of immersion.

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

What about having lammies be smaller (about the size of those mini tesco clubcards for your car keys) and in a dark neutral colour like brown/grey (not dark enough to ruin legibility)?

The smaller the lammy, the smaller the text has to be to fit the same information on, so the harder it becomes to read, especially in the dark. Likewise for dark neutral colours, since most LRP systems cannot afford a printer that prints white ink onto dark paper, or the dark ink to print the entire lammy in inverse.

I'd make PD lammies the size of a microdot and covered in invisible ink if they could still perform their function.

Has anyone ever tried printing them onto over head projector transparency film? I did some ID cards for cyberpunk once that way. the advantage as a lammie would be that at a distance you might not be able to seem them on someone hence avoiding the covered in lammies look plus in low light situations youy could hold them upto a light source and essentially they'll be back lit.

Just an idea.

I like that idea. In order to stop the ink rubbing off simply laminate the front as well. Then any security features are still protected too.
Also the (small line of holes in a line designed to weaken the material - sorry brain fart, there is a word that describes that. i just cant think of it!) can be used in cases of rip-tabs and since they're made of plastic they'll last longer........

My inner hippie is screaming at a suggestion of using MORE plastic in lrp!

"perferations" would be the word you're looking for.

I don't know what would happen to the acetate when you laminated it though (unless you used the heatless lammie pouches)

Back to the topic title

Has anyone considered that (technology aside) UK Larp is the future of European Larp, and that as people become dissaffected with their current system they break off and make their own.  That is how many of the UK systems started.

Okay.

A few ideas,

1. Checking out the wider LARP communities in Germany/Scandanavia etc... seems to be a good idea in general. Has anybody got contacts for any of the major German LARP groups? Perhapse we can invite them on here or open up communications, it might give us some insight. We might even be able to get a reciprical arrangement (Give the German organisers a chance to visit and experiment with Maelstrom for free and Matt P can go visit them later in the same way for example. At least one of them should get some good ideas.)

2. Falling numbers, From what I have witnessed I can see three big trends.
a. The big Lord of the Rings media circus made people more open to generic fantasy LARPs when they were out (and there is about a 3 year trickle-through of university students). Will (Chalicer) might be able to confirm this but I believe we had higher numbers at our local university club during this period because of it. Now that it's over it feels like we are losing people, although in reality this is just a case of going back to normal levels.
b. More LARPs, finite amount of money. There appears to be a greater number of small systems appearing in recent years and a the number of fest systems is slowly increasing, the LT particularly has lost out to this.
c. Poor advertising. Recently LARP has become visible enough to be picked out by the p*ss taking shows. We're an easy unphotogenic target and it reflects on us poorly.

Personally, I've not tried a German larp yet, though I know some german larpers from nodal point. I know some of the UK traders go over to the big german fests, so they may be able to comment on those.  I might be going over to Mittelpunkt (the german copy of nodal point) next year.

We can look forward to that again in a year or two when the Hobbit comes out.

I concur, definitions of fest depending.
