I've been tasked with updating my university society's boardgame collection, and handed a large chunk of budget to do so with (~£200) and am left with the problem of what to get. We're looking at getting 1 large game such as twilight imperium or starcraft and a range of smaller £10-£30 games. Among these we'd like to pick up some of the classics like settlers, the original munchkin & carcassonne, but would also like some new and exciting games to play. So what are your recommendations? And can anybody give me information about any of the games listed below, please?
Thanks!
Colossal Arena
Kung Fu Fighting
Shadows Over Camelot
Caylus
Lost cities
Colouretto
Power grid
Arkham horror
Gloom
Infernal contraption
Hermogor
Midgard
Monster mayhem
Once upon a time
Primordial soup
Struggle of empires
Thurn & taxis

I found Arkham Horror to be long & dull; YMMV.
You should have Flux in there -- it's a classic.
I quite like Cartagena -- it's a simple, tactical, pirate-themed boardgame. Technically it's a race game, i.e. you have to get all your pieces from one end of the board to the other (theoretically escaping through tunnels under the Spanish prison at Cartagena).
The Lord of the Rings boardgame (by Reiner Knizia) is excellent.
Cosmic Encounter is a bit of a classic -- I like the Mayfair Games version (there have been several).
Once Upon A Time is superb.

PD: Ghostdance ("The most irritating curse I've ever encountered" -- NPC played by H.)
Riftworld: Rossar Kuug ("Clearly mad, because he thinks he's a Com-Trow Skirmisher" - Aela)
Hyborian Tales: Crew, cook, dogsbody, general labourer, toilet cleaner ("Dangerously overoptimistic ref" -- Tom Nowell)
Otherwise usually crew ("Quite spry & fit, & willing to wear a big costume & run around a lot" -- various event organisers)
"My other oversized foam weapon is THE LORD" -- Questionable Content

| Shadows over Camelot is my current personal favourite. (expansion for it out in June). Plays especially well with roleplayers. Thurn and Taxi's is very good - what Ticket to Ride was meant to be Once upon is a fun light game, comparable but better than baron munchausen. Power Grid is a good if serious game. Infernal contraption is very random. I wouldn't recommned it. The website boardgamegeek is very good for independent reviews of different games if you want more info on them.

My current favorite is Betrayal at House on the Hill.
Don't hug me I'm British, we only show affection to dogs and horses.

| Id go for 'Citadels' the card game. "A Family Business" (Also known as Mob War) is an excellent vindictive game. 'Grass' is a nice game if they still make it Dont get carcassonne without 'Inns and carthedrals.' To dissent. Flux IMHO is awful. Its entirely random. you may as well deal out cards until someone gets an ace and then declare them winner.

There's a lot more to Flux than chance -- but chance does play a part. If you don't like games that involve chance, stick to chess.

| I second citadals (cheap, and plays 3-8 players IIRC) If you are going to get carcassonne, get the recent 'big box' edition, with the basic set plus the four primary expansions. More cost effective, and far easier to store. I also hate Fluxx.

There's a lot more to Flux than chance -- but chance does play a part. If you don't like games that involve chance, stick to chess. Hmm you'll have to convince me of that. Most games we played ended entirely randomly by mistake as someone put down a goal which the next player happened to have in his hand. Theres no real way of controlling what other players can do because rule changes take place immeadiately and effect the person who plays them. (no skill). I like some element of chance but removing all skill whatsoever seems to be what flux does. Its a bit like snap without the element of speed. *shrugs* Though I been wrong afore.... Tell ee what... Describe an elementary strategy to me and ill try it out and see if it works at all.
