I've always seen Flambard as a cross between eighteenth century Britain and eighteenth century France with a bit of sixteenth century Italy thrown in for good measure - a sort of Pride and Prejudice with Italian accents and big poofy dresses. And pistols.

Less eighteenth century, and less France - I see the Upper City as being the way Shakespeare reimagines Italy - the Verona of the Montagues and Capulets - while the Lower City is the bastard child of Dickensian London by Plunkett and Maclean

I still maintain have the image of Flambard along the lines of Spain under Phillip the Great... decadence on the verge of total decline. Nobles plying their politics above the heads of mortal men, extravagence and art descending even unto the streets...

Poets writing 'anonymous' doggerel: insults at public figures (or each other), blades drawn in haste as street duels resolve a man's honour and veterans debate whether to make a living as hired swords or to sign on for another round of the Mayan campaign.

The image just caught me... but I have no doubt that the Italian politcing and Dickensian shenanigans are equally valid.

Did the 1984 TT RPG titled 'Maelstrom,' agame about playing 17-18th century travellers facing perils on their journey, and including magic users drawing upon the power of something called the maelstom, have any influence on theworld background?

No. Not as far as I am aware.

And the TT game was 16th century travellers
