Well I think that the Alkyon influences are predominantly derived from 18th Century Swiss and Dutch cultures. It's by no means as simple as that but in the broadest of terms I'd say that was about right.

Actually a very significant influence for Alkyon was the well known real world culture of Sanreval. The entire economic political system is lifted unchanged from Sanreval. But there are a lot of swiss and dutch influences.

See it's only stealing if you take from one source....

There was more than one author on most cultures and different authors have differen inspirations. Take the Gnolls for example, there is a lot of Africa in the Gnolls but there is also a helluva lot of South America in there as well. Epaulettes and fruit... And just for good measure, there is a couple of splashes of what I call Pidgin-Dickens in there which I find particularly appealing.

The origianl Rukh concept was Dune Fremen. It's come quite a way since then, I think the Sandworms left in the first revision. Pity, but they were gonna be so difficult to phys-rep... Sinbad is a big influence with the Rukh for me. I'd play a Rukh if I played, although I'd probably end up trying to fight in stop-motion.

The Merisusi are obviously just vikings. Until you get the briefing sheets and it explains about the Fasces.

Some of the influences are profoundly obvious, Japan and China and the Kamakurans, for example. Other times I've had people inform me how "obvious" the cultural influence for a culture and then state some culture I've never even heard of. Flambard is based on the Malawi Yao people (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:8403452_36f7580a25_o.jpg for a picture of the Flembic Privy Council) or some such.

They're meant as backdrop, so that everyone has a common starting point from which to create their own characterisation. I never considered the acual sources to be very significant...

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

You are a bad person mister Pennington. More so because the Grand Design website is closed at the moment so I can't check up on much other than what I've gleaned from various fora.

Interestingly, the whole "marriage contract"1 incident was, as far as I am aware, arrived at with no prior knowledge of either Sanreval or the contract-heavy nature of its politics.

1 Incidentally, I had nothing to do with the contract other than reading the entire thing aloud at the reading ceremony the night before the wedding ... that was hard work!

As someone playing in Flambard, most of the culture I see portrayed is much more "Charles I / Regency bordering Victorian" or Italian (doubtless Venitian/Sicilian)
We leave all the dodgey French accents to Mill-en.

But I do think LRP is a hobby best enjoyed in a positive state of mind.
If you approach a game with a positive attitude then you're more likely to enjoy yourself there.

The Gnolls it's harder to say, they have a definite African feel to them in some parts and do look rather dashing in their frock coats and giant hats as well.

Why thankyou, five pounds was it?  Giant hats for giant heads

Yeah we've taken a lot of our influence in cultural things from Africa with regards to names and slang and South America for some of our cultural references as is suggested in the background booklet. Festival of Souls was based on Mexican Day of the Dead etc... However there is a definite Dickens slant on them as Matt has said.

In our group we always tend to go with the theme that they think they are at the forefront of fashion and civilisation but simply put they dont quite get some of it,  so their interpretations are slightly skewed.

Some may remember the gnoll with the massive hat and vegetables on her hat instead of fruit for example.

As to mahooosive Rukh pants. Funnily enough I did bring my huge trousers to the last event, but my gnoll just couldnt bring himself to wear them.

I've always seen Flambard as a cross between eighteenth century Britain and eighteenth century France with a bit of sixteenth century Italy thrown in for good measure - a sort of Pride and Prejudice with Italian accents and big poofy dresses. And pistols.

I quite like that sort of combination, though, so perhaps I'm biased.

Ta muchly Mr Grumf, a fiver it was sir.  *tips cap, tugs forelock etc.*

Interestingly, (when I was reading "The Most Evil People In History") I found out that in Vlad Tepes reign (Dracula of Wallachia, son of Vlad Dracul) it was apparently the case that there was a gold cup left in the middle of a square that anyone could drink from.  The cup was not stolen during his reign*.   This of course made me think Fidelia!  (because I'm a geek, duh.)

*This may have been to do with long wooden stakes that were not too sharp at one end and which were oiled up so that you wouldn't die too quickly.
