I've found myself with no LRP events to go to until late September, so am on the look out for something over the summer - maybe July or early-mid August. Rather than just looking at the events calendar (which I will be doing), I'm after some personal recommendations.

I am reasonably flexible on genre, no high fantasy thanks but low-mid fantasy, sci-fi, and historical are all good, and I generally prefer smallish events. I prefer simple rules systems, I'd rather not need my calculator to generate or play a character.

In terms of styles - I like it if the players and crew can stay IC, and if the costumes at least look the part (I'm no authenticity nazi but I like my LRP to look nice). Plot can be either player or story driven, but I do like to see a situation in which players can influence the world's events.

Location-wise I'm fairly flexible, but something that is within a 2 hour drive of Birmingham would be ideal (will be stretched if I really like the look of something). Camping is OK, flushing loos are good.

The dates might be wrong for you, but Eos is very much the darling of rule7 at the moment (after Maelstrom, obviously). May 16th and September ... err... 20-something. It'd be an opportunity to get in on the ground floor (May is event 2).

Largely PvP, mid-low fantasy (at least so far), magic pretty much runs the whole gamut from subtle to zappy. Low hit system, overall pretty lethal, as healing is labour intensive. Post-apocalyptic setting - we're all pioneers staking claims in a land ravaged by a magic catastrophe.

Costume standard is very high in places (points at Pete Bridges) and will (if I have anything to do with it) continue to improve.

EDIT - requirements I missed: simple system (five point character gen, most skills cost more than one point) and near Brum (May event is between Stafford and Stoke, September event near Milton Keynes).

Look at refuge, they run w'end events about every 6 weeks near Wrexham (less than 2 hours from Brum) on a site which is 5 min's off the A483, so you'd have m'way or at least dual carriageway for most of the journey.

£15 for basic event with price rising based on how much comfort you like and how little effort you want to make feeding yourself (and even then it's very reasonable), very player led with a kind of post apocolyptic/classical dark age theme and a fairly simple but innovative system. They've got a forum here on Rule 7.

I'll second EOS generally. However, it is a 'small fest' (101 players last event) so may be too many for your tastes.  It does have a different feel to both the bigger fests and smaller events.

2nd weekend of May we have the first weekend event of our heroic celtic larp, based on the slaine comic (and the tabletop RPG), down at caddihoe.  It tends to play up the celtic customs (honour, hospitality, kinship, bloodfeud, sarhead, etc., with a fair amount of combat.  The player characters are members of the king's warband (or druids and other hangers-on)  The ruleset set is comparable in complexety to blood red roses. There is a last playtest for it on this sunday in Bristol if you want to give it a try before commiting to a weekend.

I'll second refuge, too. I'm having great fun, and the facilities are pretty good (especially if you pay the extra for the B&B option). Site's nice and private, too, with no "watch out, there's scouts about" worries to stop you staying up late, singing bawdy campfire songs and getting slightly tipsy...

Awww stop it, you're making me blush at the compliments! I'm just a costume nazi in regards to myself and without trying to sound like I'm bigging myself up that costume was thrown together in 2 weeks at the cost of £75 (£50 was the facial prosthetics, teeth and makeup)

Seriously though, Eos knocked me sideways with the quality of player interaction and costume. If you miss them then you will kick yourself (and so will we if you like) ;D

Maelstrom is very very goodbut is more trading than combat. I tend to find that Maelstrom is more relaxed with a strong undercurrent of accessible intrigue whereas Eos is intensive and intimate interaction

Thanks everyone. The dates for Eos arent great - late Sept / Oct is already ridiculous (3 events in about 6 weeks), maybe another time? I've looked at the Refuge page and cant see any dates - also, which site near the A483, please not Cox Wood Scout camp, please?

Bladelands (link in sig) has four events between now and September:

2-5 May, Stocks Wood, Gloucestershire
13-15 June, Consall Scout Camp, Staffordshire
18-20 July, Consall Scout Camp, Staffordshire
8-10 August, Stocks Wood, Gloucestershire

It claims to be "high fantasy, low hit" though.  Still, it's very enjoyable.
