Another idea for long fur like stuff is Flokati Rugs. I’ve seen them used in a few film costumes and done right can be a cheap alternative to big thick furs.

Ive had a couple of reindeer skins, I wouldnt advise them. The Hair tends to come out ectremely easily and they look very bald within a couple of months use.

They are kind of good for chucking on the floor or seatsmaybe but If you want hides for costuming (my use) your be better off with a better quality style of furred/haired hide
Right, from that bearclawtraders site:
A hide for decorative purposes is a soft, hair covered hide. Reindeer hair is hollow so it breaks due to movement and wear and tear, and therefore the hide of a fully-grown reindeer is not a good material for garments. The skins of calves slaughtered early in the autumn were traditionally used for this purpose as they still have the short new autumn hair, so it does not break. The characteristics of treated fur skin are softness, warmth, and a shiny surface. When used outside, a decorative hide absorbs a certain amount of water because of the chemicals used, and so it feels damp outside. Decorative hide is used to a certain extent in making souvenirs, such as seating covers, and it can sometimes be used in outfits.

House De Clifford (http://www.houseofdeclifford.co.uk/products.html) are good fur traders, who turn up to the LRP kit fair, re-enactment markets and re-enactment events. They also do stuff like horse tails, lovely.

Personally, I happen to know a vintage shop that sells antique fur coats for £20 each. A godsend for costume purposes!

Oh, also, as already mentionned, Flokati Rugs are good. They're also vaguely authentic, the Vikings had something not too dissimilar.

*nods*

I dont really consider it good for much at all. Put it on a seat and it wear s out, same on the floor, pointless really....

Reindeer hide can make for good armour, I believe, even if not costume. Padded jacks are referenced as being covered with "a stag's skin" on the torso -- note that's an adult stag, not a Bambi. My reindeer hides were bought with that in mind, though it's a project I've not yet completed.

I think that's a win! Definitely see you there then!

Thanks everyone for the advice. There's some interesting Flokti rugs I have my eye on atm which should also help loads.

I find that rabbit skins are both cheap and warm. I bought about 15 off ebay a few years ago and made various bits of costume with them including bags, armour, scabbard linings etc. You can also 'layer' them to give yourself fake bulk ... an effect I've seen done very well by layering over american football shoulderpads.

They're also very good at keeping you dry in the rain, as rabbit fur is quite oily and sheds a lot of water. Or so I've found after borrowing my friends cloak which he's covered in pelts.
