I'm in the process of improving my Orc costume and I need furs and hides. They have to not look like the funfur stuff as I'm quite a costume snob and have no qualms about wearing dead animals (but I would actually prefer fake fur if it looks like *actual* fur). Ebay turns up much rugs for £100+ which I think is wa-hey too much (but I did get one for £20). Does anyone know where to get hides and furs from? I know Le Prevo do leather (and very excellent they are too) but I'm needing furs to make boots, clothing and some decoration. Any suggestions?

Fake leather wise, this link has some good tips. I've produced some interesting stuff with paint, pva and varnish. Takes a bit of work but building up layers on something felt like or any material withou a weave or a close weave can give some convincing results. Being for an orc costume makes it easier as you can go to town with the muck!

If you look for "faux fur" on eBay, rather than "fun fur", you should in theory get the more realistic stuff, but as ever with eBay, it's a bit of a lottery.
Alternatively, 2 sources of real fur are charity shops & theatre costume departments. Neither place is very public about it, & neither will sell it to you for fear of getting targetted by animal rights protesters, but both places do sometimes get that stuff as donations & then don't know what to do with it. So, ask nicely, and say you're a "historical re-enactor" who needs fur to give that authentic feel to his 15th century cote, and try not to come across as a militant vegan in disguise.

Nice one! It didn't occur to me that I might have been searching incorrectly! Got myself enough bits now for just shy of £15! Ta, I owe you beer!

I had a few whole reindeer hides (with hair; reindeer hairs are hollow so it's very warm) imported after dragonbane which I'm looking to sell on. £45. PM me if you are interested.

Oh -- reindeer hide -- that reminds me. There are at least a couple of hide & fur stalls that trade at re-enactment events, and at least occasionally at the Gathering. I got a couple of reindeer hides at the Gathering last time I was there, around 4 years ago I think.

| Ive had a couple of reindeer skins, I wouldnt advise them. The Hair tends to come out ectremely easily and they look very bald within a couple of months use. They are kind of good for chucking on the floor or seats maybe but If you want hides for costuming (my use) your be better off with a better quality style of furred/haired hide *nods* so, yah have a look depending on your usage...
