| Taken from the Airsoft Thread Nocturne (4/8/2008) I'm curious, how well did the NERF game run (not wanting to derail and run into the nerf thread).
Also, not wanting to derail. If someone's got a knife to your throat / gun to your back can only do singles, but you're on 8hp, surely common sense would tell you that a)not all 8 hits are on your jugular vein, and that if they hit you, you're down no matter what? But that's a discussion for another thread..<snip>...so I was looking to Airsoft or NERF to bring a different spin on combat. The Nerf system was awesome fun, but it was run over 10 years ago, when I knew alot less than I know now, and wanted something totally different from my LRP. It was unrealistic, and frankly, guns were not all that effective...still, it was fun at the time, and part of my big LRP journey. Actualy, there are systems where you might have 8 global hits (as a starting character) and a gun pointed at your heart that can't kill you in one shot (doing singles) - Maelstrom's a good example of this, as alot of people are familiar with that game. I understand the reason they've chosen that mechanic though (I generally feel you need different mechanics for those big fest-style games - and I really quite like Maelstrom). Now in that situation, the rules say you don't go down - so what do you do? Some people would say you should go down anyway, others that you shouldn't. The rules say not, common sense says you should - then again, common sense says if a fop gets hit with a halbed in the chest he should go down - but the rules say not, so we know the rules aren't aimed at realism (which is not a criticism - rules shouldn't always be realistic - horses for courses and all that). Most of the modern and futuristic gun games I play now have guns being rather lethal. Either the stats are so low that a gunshot might be able to be ignored for a while - but you're still badly wounded, or it's relatively freeform and played in a Die Hard style (if you're a tough fighter-y type you can struggle on, if not fall over and pass out/scream). This tends to mean point blank wounds can be very game-over. I'm not confident this would work at a bigger game, or at games which aren't by invitation. These smaller games also make it easier to allow grappling - having the option to knock a gun away, or grab someone's arm makes that whole sequence far more exciting and lends a greater sense of danger, risk and urgency to the situation. That would not be possible with airsoft. Airsoft also means fights only happen in designated areas - which takes some of the unpredictability out of the equation. These are aspects I like, and feel are valuable - though I suppose for more military games that's suitable.

For example, at Nexus the entire of the IC area was a "fire zone". the ooc areas and the god barn (where the toilets are) are all ooc so there isnt any designated areas for fights. As to a more military game, well, I for one would love to run "Serenity" as an airsoft game, as i think it would add greatly to the system. As it stands, i'm not in a situation were i could do that with sufficient numbers, funds or crew to make it worthwhile

Does this mean people have to be wearing their goggles at all times? Does that not become annoying and uncomfortable? Or does it mean play is not constant and/or people go to OOC areas often?

kessboy (4/8/2008)Does this mean people have to be wearing their goggles at all times? Does that not become annoying and uncomfortable? Or does it mean play is not constant and/or people go to OOC areas often? The Majority of players i've seen at airsoft larp (Nexus) prefer shooting glasses with sports straps to face masks. These are just like wearing normal glasses and i've never had a problem with them. Having said that some people prefer full fave mask or mesh "goggles". Personaly the full mask i find uncomfortable as it means it's difficult to drink/eat without going to the safe zone and given the long time in at nexus and night-ops, the mesh mask if less desireable in my mind. A good set of shooting glasses is an asset, and those people like me can even get ones with mountable lenses inside to take care of our natural short sightedness for a reasonable price in this day and age (these are essential, my first 3 airsoft games were wearing goggles but without prescription lenses and thus it wasent until my new glasses on the 4th game that i got my first in game kill.)

| I think that's one of the things that puts me off - wearing goggles/glasses all the time would be annoying...that and I can't be bothered to learn to shoot well!

As to a more military game, well, I for one would love to run "Serenity" as an airsoft game, as i think it would add greatly to the system. That would be ace! The ranged combat rules are clunky IMO- which is a pity when other rules (like engineering) have such excellent mechanisms. Of course, I haven't actually got into any gunfights there...
