Sorry forgot to mention, financial/class status is fairly irrelevant as they seem to cover the whole spectrum.

I got to dissagree and i guess agree with andy on teh emos, there are some very creative expressive people however a large portion are those who want ot be kewl and its currently the cool fad to be an emo in skin tight jeans and listen to the current music fad, like goth about 2-3 year previouse and grebo's about 2-3 previouse to that. my bets on punk next

It's gonna be skiffle next. That'll be the next cool thing. And I'm not kidding. Maybe.

EMO seems to have been what we used to call 'spooky kids' developed into. Spooky kids were the kids who dressed goth but seemed to listen to a more metal/industrial style of music and looked confused when you mentioned The Mission (or any other goth band) to them

In my experience, a decent 'goth' night seems to include a mix of many different types of subculture and play music ranging from 80's cheese to modern EBM with industrial, trad goth and many more inbetween. You can also have music by the Levellers and New Model army played at a goth night (well, you do when I DJ it certainly ) and get away with it because of the punk roots.

According to the 'music media' Emo is a development of hardcore music and not related to goth - though the look always struck me as 'goth trendy'

The middle class thing was a joke incidentally.

I thought spooky kids were the goths who specifically were goths because of Marylin Manson (as in Marylin Manson and the Spooky Kids) ? Mind you, the two uses aren't mutually exclusive.

From every single goth night I've been to the focus has been on industrial/ebm and 80's synthpop, with more trad goth played only when I request it. Mind you, if you play in a club you play good music to dance to and I'm certainly not complaining.

Neither of which are Goth.... ah well at least your the other person requesting proper music, I wondered who it was....

Im pretty sure that you cant be a Punk these days... I think the impetus behind that movement vanished.

New Model Army and Levellers?

Thats surely 'Angry Hippies'? *grins*

Both are most often catergorised as 'Folk Rock' though...

Goffs are just goffs, innit.

Emo, however, is a much-maligned term that has little or nothing to do with the sweepy-fringed kids wearing their girlfriend's jeans.  http://www.fourfa.com has the history and stuff.

Punk still exists, albeit not really (thankfully) in its anarcho-crusty Exploited-worshipping incarnation.  It's basically just the DIY attitude with tunes, no?
