Hiya,

I wanted to write a short new player guide to larp and thought why not ask the experts. The idea is for a complete novice who may well have table-topped a bit of DnD to find out what it is we do, what is allowed IC and OC and what is not allowed IC / OC, how to fight safely, how to identify plot and not ramblings of an elf, what to take on a weekend event when they were camping - that sort of thing, how to spot a magic item without lammie hunting, why PKing players is a bad idea, not to ask the best fighter / biggest hero to a duel to the death as soon as IC is called. How much cash to take for food, are traders more expensive at an event than online. I would like to have it on a general note not for one system in particular.

Any comments you people can add would be wonderful.

Thanks

Colin

I like this as an idea.

why PKing players is a bad idea,

You will alienate a hell of a lot of your potential market, not to mention loads of people on here with that assertion.

DUTT: Then: Commander J.W. Cranstan, Durholme City Guard

I was going to run for parliament, because I want to make the world a better place, but I ran into some old friends and went out for a beer instead.

Then perhaps it should include a chapter on when it's appropriate, and when not.

Indeed. It depends on the system you're in, after all. I'd just like to point out that I have no inherent objection to systems with no PVP, I just wouldn't pay money to go to one or want it as my only LARP.

We have a section in our Rules Guide for people who have no experience of live-roleplaying: http://www.eoslrp.com

Eos is inherently a PVP system, so I'd have substantial issues with your unilateral assertion.

PvP is a "issue". If it's a "why should you not do it? Why SHOULD you do it?" kind of chapter I think you'd cover everyone.

While I'm not one to enjoy PvP (I find it gets very annoying when high level PC's decide to kill you for a snacky weapon (yes it does happen you lot!) or because your know plot etc etc) I'm also not against it as it can be very "required" for you to do it.

The combat thing is a Bane on everyone. I feel that we should be fighting "Safely" not how "johnny Medieval Samurai Fung Fu MAster" did/does it. We all know a LRP weapon is not real, it looks liek one and can feel like one, however a AXE would be the Best Sharp weapon in LRP and a hammer would be the best blunt. However tha's not the case for everyone. It's more a point of "if you can see and know where your weapon is going to strike take the shot. If not don't". So no Whacking from around a corner. Your target does not need to see you striking "YOU" just need to know where you are putting your weapon. Also a LRP weapon is a weapon and should be treated with respect, the tips go quickly and people get hurt if they aren't.

Mainly though a lot of folk debate this often, the best way to get an answer from MANY MANY different people is to Pose a question. It's then fielded so we can all have a bash at it. However throw one out at a time (say one a day).

Fame and Fortune; DT/Ref/4th monster

SkullDuggery; Baron Tamworth Grim

Faded Glory; Book Crossbowman "not a mage"

I think its a very worthy idea. As there are so many differences between what system A and system B accept/promote/like/tolerate*, then it might be worth focusing on one particular system. For the potentially contentious issues you get to state how things are 'done' locally, and you could always add a note to say "This varies in other systems"

*Its not just PVP and combat, its language, attitudes to sex/courting, alcohol, behaviour during mealtimes, and so on, ad infinitum.
