I'm after a 10ft x 10ft (or 12ft x 12ft) canvas tarp which will be subsequently turned into a tent. I'm reluctant to get canvas material and sew the stuff together myself (as my sewing machine really wouldnt cope with it)

There are a dozen sites out there that want to charge me £80 for such a canvas, but there are a dozen american sites who want to charge me $80 (significantly less)

Does anyone know of a good source for such a tarp, first or second hand is ok, in the uk for about £40 or less?

Is that $80 before they add shipping?  I bet a tarp that size will cost a fortune in shipping costs because of the weight.

Just to be careful.

I have to say, that £80 price tag sounds pretty reasonable from where I'm standing. There are alot of things that are cheaper in the states, but that doesn't automatically mean we're getting ripped off this side of the pond. Thats at least 9 square metres of canvas, quite a bit more if its 12x12ft. Thats a maximum of £8 a square metre including the sewing and edging costs.

It's 80 big ones on either side of the pond pre shipping. Of course getting the american stuff shipped here puts the price over buying it here anyway.

£8 a metre for such a big tarp, sewed and edged probably is quite good value (never bought any before so hard to tell) It certainly doesnt sound unreasonable when it is put like that but the question still remains, if the americans can get it at half that price why cant we?

Supply, demand, taxes, you name it, there are so many goods in Britain that are more expensive than anywhere else.  Blame the Government.

I imagine it mostly comes down to the fact that the American minimum living wage is comparatively a hell of a lot lower than ours, and that our currency is worth more than theirs. Americans will often have to work as hard for that $80 as you would have to for your £80. There is also the issue of differences in taxes etc.

Economics confuses me to be perfectly honest

Edited to add: What kind of tent are you making?
