OK, I have some nice thick leather, a knife and a pattern and some ideas about making matching vambraces and greaves for my next Legion of Dreams Character.
Looking at traders there are two distinctive camps, those who lace and those who buckle.
Looking at Le Prevo and other leather crafting sites I have three options
a) lacing through grommets (cheap and can look pretty on vambraces if done right and the pattern ensures the vambraces meet in the middle, but can look crap on greaves)
b) lacing through D-rings attached by rivets (from Le Prevo, look very nice and lacing should go through more smoothly, but is a little more expensive) or
c) Buckles, using either straps that are cut in the pattern piece as one unit, or seperate and stitched/riveted on.
Now I would like to use the same method on the two items, but they do an ever to slightly different job so what you can get away with for Vambraces, you may not be able to do on greaves. And how can you make greaves look good from the back? At the moment b) is my favourite of the three, but am willing to bend to the wisdom of those who quite frankly, know better than I do.

| We have noticed thro sales that most folk go for straps rather than lacing, if your using a good thick leather and like the look of lacing then i would recommend 3mm round lacing from leprevo, personnaly i find lacing up greaves a pain in the arse but they can look good, same with bracers. Go with the look you want, but use good quality lacing, we are at stockwood most LOD weekends so available for advice on construction, design or materials, or just drop us an email shop@lamialeather.co.uk

| ps, option A on bracers and B on greaves would be a good choice but you could get away with straps on greaves and lacing on bracers

The A & B works well in my head, as does B & B, especially if colour of the the D rings match the colour of the rivets, more shiny hardware. I think people prefer straps when doing armour because lacing can be a pain in the arse to do up, but I'm used to corsets so this will nothing new to me.
Thanks alot. Hope to see you at Darkmere.

I've always found laced vambraces to be really difficult to tie on my own. Since I prefer kit I can get into without assistance, I'd go for buckled straps on the vambraces. I'd do the same on the greaves partly so they match and partly because it would be quicker to do up.

| I'd go for straps (as i have just done so on my vambraces) as said abouve lacing can be a pain to do up. Id also stich on the buckles as it means you can have a hard leather face to teh brace/greaves but a softer more flexable strap. Also a nice little thing for the stiching is a hand sewing machine, its a handle with a spool of thread in it with a leather sewingmachine needile in teh end you put it though the leather thread a peice of thread though teh loop produced onteh other side and then pull it back and continue. Its alot easier and very neat than doing a normal stich. http://www.sdtradingco.com/lacingandstitching/1216.jpg

Straps all the way. I have tried lacing and it's a pain in the arse to tie laces on your arms. If I had a second choice it would still be straps on the arms - you can do a buckle up with one hand. So both together, straps straps straps.

Although buckles are easier to do up on your own as everyone else says here, I tend to prefer laces as they don't catch on other costume. I guess its just a bit of tial and error to see what works for you. Sorry if thats not helpful.

Actually that is useful. I need to know stuff like that, it's why I asked. Straps are easier to use but often they can get vdry ragged looking and the ends curl which I don't like, but with lacing, it can slip, especially if not done up right, so I'm just weighing things up at the moment.
You lot have given me food for thought, thanks.
